Finlaysonโ€™s squirrels (Callosciurus finlaysonii) are considered invasive species and were introduced to the Philippines, likely via the pet trade from their native countries in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam)

It's first reported sightings in Metro Manila. was in 2007. While some anecdotal reports suggest sightings in upscale villages in Makati as early as the 1980s or 1990s.

๐Ÿ Happy Serpent Day โ€“ February 1! ๐Ÿ
Serpents, commonly known as snakes, are long, legless reptiles that can be found in a wide variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, and even near human communities.

They play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling rodent and pest populations, which helps protect crops and limit the spread of disease. Serpents are also an essential link in the food chain, serving as both predators and prey for other animals. On this Serpent Day, letโ€™s raise awareness, appreciate their importance in nature, and promote respect and conservation for these fascinating yet often misunderstood creatures.

King Cobra & Philippine Cobra Mating & Reproduction โ€” Science-Based Wildlife Insights

The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) exhibits one of the most remarkable reproductive strategies among snakes. In many parts of its range, its breeding season typically occurs during the dry months, with copulation commonly observed from January to April as males actively seek receptive females. After mating, the female uniquely builds a nest of leaves and vegetation โ€” a rare behavior among snakes โ€” into which she lays 20โ€“40 leathery eggs and vigilantly guards them throughout the 50โ€“80+-day incubation period, often remaining coiled atop the nest until hatching. Males may remain nearby during this time, and males also engage in ritualized combat to establish dominance and mating rights.

In contrast, the Philippine cobra (Naja philippinensis) follows a more opportunistic reproductive pattern tied to the tropical climate of the Philippines. This species is oviparous (egg-laying) and does not show a sharply defined mating season; rather, reproductive activity can occur year-round in warm conditions, though peak breeding may coincide with seasonal environmental cues such as the onset of the dry season. Females lay 10โ€“20 eggs in concealed sites like leaf litter or burrows, and the eggs incubate for about 70โ€“90 days before the hatchlings emerge fully independent and venomous.

Both species demonstrate fascinating and distinct reproductive adaptations โ€” from the king cobraโ€™s nest building and parental investment to the Philippine cobraโ€™s flexible breeding timing โ€” reflecting their evolutionary responses to ecological conditions in Asiaโ€™s diverse habitats.

Stay safe, Troopers!
