Many people believe that children are too young to take part in serious responsibilities. However, the story of Christ Nathan Fabracuer reminds us that when the youth are given the right knowledge and training, they can play a vital role in emergency and disaster response.

At just 10 years old, Nathan became one of the responders during a vehicular accident along Quimpo Boulevard in Davao City last Thursday evening, April 30. He had only stepped out to buy ice cream when he witnessed the accident. Instead of panicking or simply watching from a distance, he immediately stepped forward to helpโ€”showing courage and readiness beyond his age.

Nathanโ€™s preparedness did not happen overnight. For the past five years, his father, a trainer from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, has been bringing him to DRRM trainings and seminars. Through these experiences, Nathan successfully completed training in Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support, equipping him with the skills needed to assist during emergencies.

His story highlights the importance of engaging the youth in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM). When young people are:

โ€ข educated about disaster preparedness
โ€ข exposed to emergency response training
โ€ข encouraged to participate in community safety initiatives

they become empowered individuals who can contribute to saving lives and strengthening community resilience.

The youth are not only the leaders of tomorrowโ€”they can also be responders of today when given the opportunity and proper guidance.

We salute you, Christ Nathan Fabracuer. Your courage and willingness to serve are an inspiration to everyone.

Age does not define the ability to helpโ€”preparedness does.
