A hidden natural treasure has been discovered in Barangay Dinaratan, Salcedo, Ilocos Sur - the rare and endemic Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys), locally known as “Tayabak.”

Known for its breathtaking turquoise flowers and featured on the back of the Philippine five-peso coin, the Jade Vine is a symbol of the country’s rich biodiversity and healthy forest ecosystems. Its presence in the upland forests of Dinaratan confirms that parts of the area remain ecologically intact and capable of supporting rare and sensitive species.

First recorded on April 25, 2026 by Mr. Joseph Masanda, Mr. Reynand Jake Bacdayan, and Mr. Aron Balluguing, and subsequently validated on May 8, 2026 by the MENRO staff, with the assistance of Mr. John Luquingan from the said barangay, this discovery highlights the urgent need to protect and conserve our remaining natural habitats.

May this discovery serve as a powerful reminder that safeguarding our forests also means preserving the rare and remarkable wildlife and plant species that make the Philippines one of the world’s richest centers of biodiversity.

Let us continue to protect and nurture our environment, promote sustainable conservation practices, and treasure our natural heritage so that future generations may continue to witness, appreciate, and benefit from the beauty and richness of our country’s unique ecosystems.
