The Earth gives us everything. Now, it’s our time to give back.

This , let us pause and reflect on the land we walk on, the air we breathe and the water that sustains all life. These are not merely resources, they are entrusted to us, calling on each of us to become responsible stewards of our environment.

In a time when natural catastrophes are becoming a frequent reality, especially for developing countries like the Philippines, the role of the Filipino youth has never been more vital. We are challenged not only to care, but to act with purpose, discipline and a deep sense of stewardship over our natural heritage.

Together, let us rise as proactive stewards of the Earth empowered, informed, and united in safeguarding our environment. Let us lead with responsibility and take meaningful, collective action toward a greener, more climate-resilient future.

Because caring for the Earth is not just an advocacy, it is our duty to our communities, our nation and the generations yet to come.

As the world advances with new technologies, the demand for natural resources continues to grow, placing increasing pressure on the planet that sustains us. However, human activities — from deforestation and land-use change to unsustainable production and consumption — are accelerating ecosystem decline.

This Earth Day 2026, we are reminded that protecting the climate remains central to safeguarding ecosystems, stable weather patterns, and human well-being.

With this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” communities around the world are called to take meaningful action to protect our common home. From supporting clean energy to protecting forests, water, and biodiversity, every step contributes to a more resilient future.

International Mother Earth Day also reminds us of our shared responsibility to live in harmony with nature, as recognized in the Rio Declaration produced at the 1992 Earth Summit, ensuring a balanced path for economic progress, social development, and environmental protection for present and future generations.

Today, we celebrate not only our planet but also the vital lifelines that sustain it—our watersheds. Watersheds are essential in providing clean water, supporting biodiversity, preventing floods, and sustaining communities and livelihoods.

Just because we are in comfort now, doesn't mean it wont affect us in the long run. Protect our watersheds. Protect our source of water. Protect our future.

🌍 What is a Watershed? 💧

A watershed is an area of land where all the rainwater and surface water flow into one common place, like a river, lake or ocean. You can think of it like nature’s own drainage system everything eventually moves toward a single outlet.

When it rains, water doesn’t just stay where it falls. It travels across the land, flowing through small streams, joining bigger rivers and finally reaching one main point. All the land that contributes water to that point is called a watershed.

The boundaries of a watershed are usually formed by higher areas like hills or mountains, known as divides. These natural barriers guide the direction of water flow, separating one watershed from another.

Watersheds are very important for our daily lives. They help supply clean water, support plants and animals and even reduce flooding. But at the same time, anything we do on land like pollution or deforestation can affect the water quality inside that watershed.

🌱 Protecting watersheds means protecting our water, environment and future.

Protect and preserve our watersheds. They are our natural flood controls!

“Water flow regulation by forests reduces potential floodwater generation in watersheds and in areas downstream of watersheds, thereby reducing the risk of flooding.

Higher forest cover can help reduce the volume of floodwater generated in a watershed by 27% to 47% during the three wettest months of the year compared to a ‘No Forest’ cover simulation in the UMRBPL.”

[Note: The Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape currently only has ~25% forest cover based on available data, despite being protected by law since 1904.]
