LIVELIHOOD CENTER

BUGANA, a livelihood project of Kabuganaan Philippines Ministries (KPM), in partnership with Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM), and in collaboration with the Capiznon (Kasapulanan) Baptist Churches Inc. (CKBC), sells a wide range of high quality indigenous products, souvenir items, household items, hand tailored sewing items, and artisanal products such as pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, candles, handmade soaps, and much, much more. BUGANA provides support (design, product development, quality control, etc.) and a space for church or community based groups (women, men, youth, etc.) to sell their products.

BUGANA also provides training and employment opportunities for vulnerable women, and out-of-school youth, from urban poor communities in Roxas City. These individuals work in BUGANA’s workshop to produce unique, attractive, and high quality handmade products.

In addition, BUGANA provides small business training seminars on the ‘Essentials’ of owning and operating your own small business. The goal of these small business training seminars is to provide people with the knowledge, tools, and skills necessary to start their own small business, which will bring about sustainable community transformation and development.

We did not just create a logo to look nice and attractive. Rather, we put a lot of thought into the design of our logo because we wanted it to reflect and communicate the purpose of our organization and reasons why we do what we do. Let’s take a closer look.

First, the word BUGANA is Hiligaynon (local dialect of Illonggo people) word, which means ‘ABUNDANT’. This abundance, however, is not simply a material abundance found in financial wealth and/or material possessions. Abundant life refers to life in the fullness of joy and strength for the mind, body, and soul. At BUGANA, we are committed to introducing people to this abundant life, which is found only by placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Second, layered overtop of the word BUGANA are tribal designs, which reflect the Filipino nation. The Philippines, which is made up of over 200 different tribal groups and indigenous peoples, is one of the most culturally diverse nations of the world. Likewise, the world that we live in is made up of many different nations representing countless ethnic and indigenous people groups, but we are all equally created in the image and likeness of God. At BUGANA we are committed to serving all peoples, in the Philippines and around the world, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, religion, sexual identity, political ideology, and social status.

Third, there is a golden grain of rice that circles around the letter ‘G’. Both the image of the rice grain and the golden colour are symbolic of abundance within Filipino culture. Rice is life and is a staple food for Filipino families. At BUGANA, we are committed in the pursuit of ensuring that those who are poor, widowed, marginalized, and oppressed, have access to enough, and healthy food, for themselves and their families.

Fourth, below the word BUGANA are the words ‘Kabuhi’ (life), ‘Pamilya’ (Family), and ‘Comunidad’ (Community). These words were chosen to reflect the wholistic approach that we take towards sustainable community transformation and development. At BUGANA, we are committed to working for sustainable livelihood opportunities and development for individuals, families, and communities in the Philippines and around the world.

Finally, separating the words ‘Kabuhi’, ‘Pamilya’, ‘Comunidad’ are two tiny Ichathys images (also known as the ‘Jesus Fish’), which represent our connection to the Christian faith. For centuries, the Ichathys symbol has been used by people to indicate and communicate their commitment to the Christian faith as followers of Jesus. At BUGANA, our Christian faith is an integral part of who we are as an organization and we are committed to upholding Christian values, integrity, stewardship, accountability, excellence, and morals as we carry out our work.
