LOOK! BYLI Leader Receives Gawad Urian Award
Dedicated to take on the challenge of telling new stories from the regions — stories that demand to be seen, heard, and valued, BYLI Leader and a Capizeña filmmaker, Kyd Torato, received the 48th Gawad Urian Award for Best Short Film for her “Bisan Abo, Wala Bilin” or Even Ashes, Nothing Remains Film, which she wrote and directed. Her film was one of only five short films nominated for artistic excellence out of 124 films released in 2024 by the Gawad Urian, a significant recognition from the prestigious Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
Ms. Torato, an awardee of the 6th Batang Capiznon Awards – Search for the Ten Outstanding Students of Capiz (TOSOC) 2018 where she represented Capiz National High School, graduated from the University of the Philippines in the Visayas with a degree in Communication and Media Studies. During her college years, she studied world and Philippine cinema, gender studies, screenwriting, and directing under esteemed film professors in the university. Post-graduation, she apprenticed at Southern Lantern Studios and was mentored by award-winning filmmakers Arden Rod Condez, Sonny Calvento, and Sheron Dayoc.
Her first short film, Si Oddie, premiered at the 18th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and won Best Director and the Cardinal Bronze Award at the CineMapúa International Student Short Film Festival. Meanwhile, her latest work, Bisan Abo, Wala Bilin or Even Ashes, Nothing Remains, received a production grant from Netflix at the 2023 INDIEGENIUS Project Lab. It was awarded Best Philippine Short at the Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival, 2nd Best Short Film at the 2024 Sinag Maynila Film Festival, and was shortlisted for Best Live Action Short Film by the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers for the 5th Pinoy Rebyu Awards. The film had its international premiere at the JOGJA-NETPAC Asian Film Festival in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, followed by a screening at the Blue Chair Film Festival in Luang Prabang, Laos. It was also selected as one of the Southeast Asian films to be screened at the National Gallery of Singapore for Painting With Light: Festival of International Films on Art.
Recently, Kyd also participated in the final leg of the AirAsia Cross-Residency Program in Vietnam, where she collaborated with fellow Filipina visual artist Olive Gloria on a project titled Weavers Are Poets, Poets Are Weavers. This immersive work—combining video, sound, embroidery, and textile—explores how identity, memory, and resistance are intricately woven into the everyday lives of women.
As a regional filmmaker, Kyd is dedicated to elevating narratives from the sidelines, placing them at the forefront of Philippine Cinema's diverse storytelling landscape. Despite the limited resources in her hometown, she continues to refine her craft, determined to carve out space for regional voices.
BYLI community is proud of your achievement, Kyd!
