January is Zero Waste Month

Do you still remember the simple ways our community lived before—bringing empty bottles when buying cooking oil, soy sauce, vinegar, or shoktong from the neighborhood store? Carrying our own baskets, bayong, or eco-bags to the market? Having fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables wrapped in paper or banana leaves? Returning soft drink and beer bottles instead of throwing them away?

Long before the term existed, our communities were already practicing what we now call Zero Waste. These habits were part of our everyday life—practical, responsible, and deeply rooted in our culture. Over time, we may have forgotten them, but the values behind them remain relevant today.

Every January, we observe International Zero Waste Month, and in the Philippines, National Zero Waste Management Month. This is a timely call for all of us—families, barangays, schools, and local businesses—to work together in properly managing our waste. This means practicing waste segregation at source and truly committing to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, while also learning to refuse single-use plastics.

If we were able to do this before, there is no reason we cannot do it again today. Zero Waste starts at home. Zero Waste starts in the barangay.

Rooted in Joy

Today, I took time to pause, breathe, and reconnect with nature by hugging one of my favorite trees, Bagras or Rainbow Tree.

There’s something magical about wrapping your arms around a living being that’s been standing tall through sunshine and storm. It’s grounding, healing, and humbling all at once.

Real and gentle happiness that only nature can give and only tree huggers can understand 😊😉

From My Home to Their Future

Today, I had the privilege of donating fruit tree seedlings to the SSLG Government of PMRMIS–South . 9 Magnolia variety jackfruits, 2 avocados, and 1 guyabano, all personally enjoyed and propagated from my own home.

To the youth leaders of PMRMIS–South:
May you grow these fruit trees with pride and purpose. Let them remind you that every small act of stewardship creates ripples far beyond today.
May these trees stand as symbols of your commitment to a greener, kinder, and more abundant future.

Let’s plant not just for ourselves, but for those who come after us.

Padayon lang!

The Letter That Reaffirmed My Purpose

Tonight, I opened my inbox and found a simple message from one of the learners who attended DepEd’s ARANGKA: Aspiring Leaders Rally for Achievements, New Growth, Knowledge and Advancement. It said:

“ᴡʜᴀᴛ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴀᴄᴋʟᴇᴅ ᴇᴀʀʟɪᴇʀ ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ʜɪᴛ ᴜꜱ ᴅᴇᴇᴘ, ᴍᴀ’ᴀᴍ. ᴡᴇ ʀᴇᴀʟɪᴢᴇᴅ ᴀɴᴅ ʟᴇᴀʀɴᴇᴅ ᴀ ʟᴏᴛ. ʏᴏᴜ ɪɴꜱᴘɪʀᴇᴅ ᴜꜱ ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ ᴇᴄᴏ-ᴡᴀʀʀɪᴏʀꜱ, ᴛᴏ ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ᴀ ᴅɪꜰꜰᴇʀᴇɴᴄᴇ, ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ ʟɪᴋᴇ ʏᴏᴜ.”

I paused.
I smiled.
And I felt my heart overflow.

THIS is why I continue to serve.
THIS is why I show up.
THIS is why I choose to speak, to teach, to push for climate action — even when it’s hard.

Because somewhere in the audience, there is always one young person who listens…
…and decides to rise.

To that learner who wrote to me — thank you.
Your words remind me that every seed of awareness we plant today can bloom into a movement tomorrow.

To all our youth, keep asking questions, keep caring and keep fighting for our planet.

If one young mind is inspired, hope is alive
