Hindi lamang sa balota nasusukat ang demokrasya. Nabubuhay din ito sa bawat tinig na malayang nagsasalita, sa bawat katotohanang isinisiwalat, at sa bawat mamamayang nakikiisa sa mga usapin at pagkilos na humuhubog sa kinabukasan ng bayan.

Tuwing setyembre 15, ipinagdiriwang ang International Day of Democracy upang itaguyod at paigtingin ang prinsipyo ng demokrasya sa buong mundo. Itinatag ito sa bisa ng isang United Nations General Resolution noong 2007 at unang ipinagdiwang noong 2008.

Higit pa sa isang sistema ng pamamahala ang demokrasya, ito rin ay pagkilala sa kapangyarihan nating mga mamamayan. Ito ay ang karapatan natin sa malaya at tunay na halalan, malayang pamamahayag at pagpapahayag, panuntunan ng batas, at paggalang sa karapatang pantao.

Ngunit ang demokrasya ay hindi kusang nananatili. Ito ay kailangang bantayan, gamitin, at ipaglaban. Lalo na sa panahong ang katotohanan ay maaaring patahimikin at ang tinig ng mamamayan ay maaaring isantabi.
