💡𝒞𝒲𝒯𝒮 2 𝒰𝓇𝒷𝒶𝓃 𝑀𝒾𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒫𝓇𝑜𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓂: 𝐼𝓃𝒻𝑜 𝒯𝒾𝒹𝒷𝒾𝓉𝓈

Sa bawat araw, libo-libong tonelada ng basura ang nalilikha sa Pilipinas 🇵🇭 ngunit sapat ba ang ating ginagawa upang ito ay mapamahalaan nang maayos? 🤔

Tinatayang 61,000 metric tons ng solid waste 🗑️ ang nalilikha araw-araw sa bansa, at halos 24% nito ay plastik! 😟 Sa kasalukuyan, karamihan sa mga basura ay napupunta sa mga landfill, dumpsite, o sa ating natural na kapaligiran 🌊, at iilan lamang ang napoproseso sa mga Material Recovery Facility (MRF).

Pero ano nga ba ang mga Material Recovery Facility (MRF)? ♻️
Ang MRF ay isang pasilidad kung saan ang mga basura ay pinaghihiwalay, pinoproseso, at nire-recycle. Kabilang dito ang:
• Drop-off centers para sa mga segregated waste ng mga residente 📦
• Sorting stations kung saan pinaghihiwalay ang basura ayon sa uri at komposisyon 🧑‍🔬
• Composting areas para sa mga biodegradable na basura 🌱
• Recycling facilities kung saan pinoproseso ang mga recyclable na materyales upang muling magamit 🔄

Ang pagtatayo ng mga pasilidad na ito ay isinusulong ng Republic Act 9003 o Ecological Solid Waste Management Act ⚖️ dahil mahalaga ang mga MRFs sa pagkakaroon ng sustainable waste management sa ating bansa. Ngunit ayon sa World Bank (2020), sa Metro Manila, 334 lamang sa 1,710 barangay ang may sariling MRF, at marami sa mga ito ang nahihirapan dahil sa kakulangan ng pondo, tauhan, at sapat na imprastraktura at kagamitan. 😔

Sa pamamagitan ng mga MRF, ang basura ay nagiging yaman. ✨ Ito ay isang konseptong kilala bilang Urban Mining. 💎 At ang UP Diliman's Urban Mining Program: Yaman sa Lungsod ay naglalayong suportahan at palakasin ang mga komunidad na nagpapatakbo ng mga MRF na ito. 💪 Ang mga pasilidad at komunidad na ito ay napakahalaga sa ating lipunan, kaya nararapat lamang na bigyan natin sila ng atensyon at suporta. Ang malinis at napapanatiling komunidad ay nagsisimula sa bawat isa sa atin. Sa simpleng tamang paghihiwalay ng basura at pakikiisa sa mga programang pangkalikasan, makakatulong tayo sa pagbuo ng mas malinis, mas ligtas, at mas napapanatiling kinabukasan. ➡️💚

💡𝒞𝒲𝒯𝒮 2 𝒰𝓇𝒷𝒶𝓃 𝑀𝒾𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒫𝓇𝑜𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓂: 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝓂𝓊𝓃𝒾𝓉𝓎 𝒱𝒾𝓈𝒾𝓉

Last March 02, 09, and 16, 2026, the CWTS 2 students from sections MCDE-A, MCDE-B, MCDE-C, MCDE-D, and MCDE-E of the UP Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering conducted off-campus academic field activities in support of the CWTS 2 Urban Mining Project 📍.

The activity focused on identifying real operational challenges encountered in plastic recovery and segregation ♻️. Students engaged in discussions with QC PESO personnel and local waste workers to better understand existing processes and constraints within materials recovery systems 🤝.

One of the primary concerns raised during the consultation was the difficulty of removing tightly adhered plastic labels from containers 🏷️. In many cases, these labels can only be removed by cutting, which leads to material loss and additional waste ✂️. This challenge highlights the need for more efficient separation methods that preserve the integrity of recyclable plastics.

To further investigate the issue, the Technical Research and Development committee from MCDE-E obtained plastic samples with labels that are difficult to remove 🔍. These samples will be used for independent testing and evaluation to explore possible improvements in label separation techniques 🧪.

The activity concluded with an open exchange of questions, allowing students to clarify technical and operational concerns related to the Urban Mining Project 💬. Overall, the engagement strengthened the students’ understanding of community-based waste management challenges and reinforced the importance of developing practical, sustainable solutions grounded in real-world conditions 🌱.

💡 𝓒𝓦𝓣𝓢 2 𝓢𝓹𝓮𝓬𝓲𝓪𝓵 𝓣𝓪𝓵𝓴: 𝓓𝓮𝓼𝓲𝓰𝓷 𝓣𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓴𝓲𝓷𝓰 & 𝓟𝓲𝓽𝓬𝓱 𝓓𝓮𝓬𝓴 𝓒𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷

On February 16, 2026, the CWTS 2 students of the UP Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering attended a special talk titled “𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣” 🎤. The session was facilitated by Engr. Nerissa Unielle Quenga from Materials R&D and Consulting Facility (MRCF).

The session emphasized value creation through 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 🚀, highlighting how meaningful solutions start from understanding real community needs. The speaker described design thinking as a 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯-𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 🤝 that guides individuals in developing practical and impactful ideas.

The discussion introduced the five steps of Design Thinking ⚙️:

This framework serves as a guide for creating solutions through continuous improvement. Alongside this, students were taught key principles in pitch deck creation 📊, emphasizing that pitches should be:

The talk concluded with an interactive Q&A portion 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️, where students raised questions related to the 𝘾𝙒𝙏𝙎 2 𝙐𝙧𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 🏗️. Overall, the session provided students with essential strategies for both project development and effective presentation, supporting the creation of well-planned and impactful community initiatives.🌟

Ang ating programa ay ang kauna-unahang Urban Mining extension program sa UPDCOE at nagsimula ito bilang isang produkto ng Transformative Education for Sustainable Social Impact (TESSI) Institute workshop ng NSTP Diliman Office na ginanap noong Hulyo 2024. Ang layunin ng workshop ay gawing mas likas-kaya at mas makabuluhan ang mga proyektong ipinapatupad ng NSTP. Sa patuloy na pakikipagtulungan sa Quezon City Public Employment Service Office (QC PESO), Lehigh University, at UPD Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development - OVCRD Office of Extension Coordination, OVCRD, UP Diliman, nangangako ang inisyatiba ng mas maraming kolaborasyon upang matiyak ang patuloy na tagumpay ng ating extension program.
