As one community, we enjoin everyone in remembering Divine with affection and gratitude, and grieve with all those who loved him — in the Philippines, in Nigeria, and beyond.

The Sanggunian would like to extend the invitation to join the Candle Light Service for Divine Adili, a Nigerian tradition similar to a wake, as we gather in prayer and remembrance.

Candle Light Service (Wake)
Starting June 13, 2026

Viewing: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Mass: 6:00 PM

Immaculate Conception Chapel (College Chapel)
Loyola Campus, Ateneo de Manila University
Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City

Please continue to keep Divine, his family, and all who mourn his passing in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss, as we entrust him to God’s loving mercy and embrace.

May he rest in God’s peace.

Divine Adili’s journey brought him far from home, but along the way he found teammates, classmates, coaches, and friends who came to know and love him.

He made a lasting impact through the warmth of his presence, the friendships he formed, and the joy he brought to the communities he became part of. We remember Divine with affection and gratitude, and grieve with all those who loved him — in the Philippines, in Nigeria, and beyond.

TOMORROW WE WEAR BLACK.

In grief and solidarity, we enjoin the Ateneo community to WEAR BLACK tomorrow to honor the lives of our fellow Blue Eagles, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

As we honor their memory, we also continue to heed the call of their families, friends, and loved ones for justice, truth, and accountability. Let us come together as one community in expressing our desire for clarity.

Beyond wearing a color in honor of them, we hope that we will eventually be able to honor their lives by embodying an institutional commitment to safety and care for each member of our community, especially for our student-athletes.

We mourn alongside the community over the loss of our fellow Blue Eagles, student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who passed away on June 8th in a drowning incident during an offseason activity.

The Sanggunian, together with the whole student body, expresses its deepest condolences to their families, teammates, and friends. We extend our prayers for them and their loved ones amid this sorrowful time. May we also be able to strengthen our communities of care, especially after the incident.

At this time, we call on the University to provide adequate support and transparency to the bereaved families and ensure that the circumstances surrounding this tragedy are met with integrity and accountability through an exhaustive investigation.

We hope that this tragedy compels us to deeper reflection on the realities faced by our student-athletes and the support systems available to them. We urge our community to extend their support for our student-athletes, ensuring that they are met with compassion, understanding, and care during times of vulnerability.

Rest in Peace, Rene and Divine ✝️.
