For decades, millions of Filipinos have sought opportunities abroad, making overseas employment and remittances an increasingly important part of the countryโs economic and social landscape. But how did the OFW economy come to be?
The rise of overseas employment was shaped by a combination of domestic economic pressures, growing demand for labor abroad, particularly during the Gulf oil boom, and government efforts to facilitate overseas employment.
But behind the economic figures are the stories of the Filipinos who left, the families who stayed behind, and the plans that changed along the way.
In our latest Oikonomia article, we look back at the emergence of the OFW economy during and after the Marcos era, tracing its economic roots while looking at the experience of one Filipino family who left the Philippines in 1972.
