[THE OIKONOMIA]

The Philippines is now officially an Upper-Middle Income Country (UMIC). 📈

The milestone reflects years of economic growth and opens new opportunities for investment, stronger credit standing, and long-term development. But does moving up the World Bank's income classifications mean that the lives of ordinary Filipinos have also improved?

Beyond income figures lie questions of purchasing power, poverty, inequality, food security, and overall quality of life and looking beyond the UMIC label reveals a more nuanced picture of what economic progress truly means and whether it is felt across society.

This article examines what the Philippines' new income status tells us and, just as importantly, what it leaves out.

• The prerequisites for Econ 199.1 are Econ 117.01, Econ 117.02, Econ 118.01, and Econ 118.02.
• Only ONE student per thesis pair should accomplish the Google Form. The student who signs up will be asked to provide their partner’s details. Please coordinate with your thesis partner beforehand to avoid duplicate submissions.

You may also refer to the schedule matrix provided for the available Econ 199.1 classes for the First Semester of SY 2026-2027.
