Kalidad ng hangin sa Quezon City
April 17 - 18, 2026

Statement:

We applaud the Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta for issuing a fatwa that declares forcing women to marry their perpetrator as haram or forbidden under the Shari'ah or Islamic law.

The Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta is the highest religious advisory body and issues fatwas, or religious edicts, that guide the interpretation and application of Islamic teachings in various contexts.

The fatwa affirms the fundamental rights of women and girls and emphasizes that sexual violence must be met with justice: victim-survivors should not be trapped in a cycle of violence and perpetrators should not evade persecution.

It also sets a powerful precedent for upholding dignity and respect, paving the way for a future free from violence and oppression.

Our planet is being pushed to the limits towards a crisis that, as Ms. Yols Rafol Esguerra DRRNetPhils co-convener and PMPI head puts it, "...endangers our life systems, undermines our human rights, and could ultimately cost us our lives."

BREAKING: Planet being pushed beyond limits, all climate indicators “flashing red,” warns UN chief.

The amount of heat trapped by the Earth reached record levels in 2025, with the consequences of such warming feared to last for thousands of years, the UN warned Monday.

“The global climate is in a state of emergency. Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits. Every key climate indicator is flashing red,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said as the UN’s World Meteorological Organization published its annual climate overview. | via Agence France-Presse

Today, we celebrate International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. A 2024 US-based report on preparedness suggests that every dollar spent on preparedness could save $13 in economic costs, damage, and cleanup.

Recent weeks have proven that immediate and comprehensive response is integral to saving lives. A reactive approach to disaster could deplete resources and strain manpower, especially during multiple and widespread disaster events.

This year, minimizing risk goes beyond the sheer number and cost of destruction. It is also a critical call to fund preparedness initiatives. During disaster, the poor communities, the vulnerable population are affected disproportionally and putting them first when it comes to disaster risk reduction will lead to more lives and assets saved and protected.

Furthermore, investing in risk reduction means:

• No one left behind. Comprehensive and actionable local disaster risk reduction programming by and for the community.
• Raising awareness through easy-to-understand, reliable community risk profiles (which should include risk mapping) and ensuring sufficient funding for government tools (e.g., Hazard Hunter, Fault Finder) so people can prepare and plan accordingly.
• Ensuring government resources are spent on sustainable and disaster-proof infrastructure that does not add to existing risks.
• Investing in capacity building of communities on disaster risk reduction and providing a system that actively seeks out their participation in decreasing their risks and vulnerabilities.
