📢 PUBLICATION ALERT!
The Pathogen-Host-Environment Interactions Research Laboratory (PHEIRL) is delighted to share a recent publication entitled “Seasonal variation of /Escherichia coli/-harbored blaTEM, blaCTX-M, and blaSHV genes in selected tributaries of Laguna Lake, Philippines.”
Laguna Lake, the Philippines’ largest lake, is a vital ecological and economic resource; however, it is affected by domestic, industrial, and agricultural wastes. This study addressed the issue of pollution by detecting beta-lactamase (bla) genes, which confer resistance to some of the most commonly used classes of antimicrobials.
The findings revealed varying prevalence of three bla subtypes, with blaTEM being the most frequently detected. Seasonal (dry vs. wet seasons) and site-specific variations in bla gene prevalence were also observed, which may be attributed to differences in anthropogenic activities and water quality parameters.
