RESTORING HARMONY AT THE DOORSTEP: How Barangay Poblacion’s "Dungog Kariton" is Revolutionizing Community Mediation šŸ¤

The ā€œDungog Karitonā€ initiative, a 2025 Galing Pook Awardee, was featured on Bilyonaryo News Channel’s Politiko Nightly during its December 8, 2025 episode.

This initiative by Barangay Poblacion, Tupi, South Cotabato, serves as a practical approach to localized conflict resolution. By bringing mediation services directly to households, the program addresses disputes that often fall outside the scope of formal systems. The effort is notable for how it mobilizes youth, elders, and civic groups to settle family and land issues through dialogue and shared understanding.

Presented by Punong Barangay Vergel Javier, the program demonstrates how mobile mediation effectively addresses modern governance challenges. The results are significant: out of 960 disputes raised over three years, only 63 cases required escalation to formal Katarungang Pambarangay proceedings, significantly reducing the burden on the formal legal system.

By proving that grassroots participation can restore community harmony, Barangay Poblacion has set a new benchmark for peaceful and inclusive leadership. The Galing Pook Foundation remains committed to promoting such innovative models to encourage similar excellence in governance across the country.

The Galing Pook Foundation and The Asia Foundation successfully conducted a series of Provincial Convenings from February 3–5, 2026, bringing together local leaders from across the BARMM. These sessions served as a vital platform for the League of Municipalities (LMPs), component cities, and the Special Geographic Areas (SGAs) to engage in meaningful dialogues and surface key local issues.

The provincial convenings gathered the city and municipal mayors, and technical experts, from:
šŸ“ Lanao del Sur (held in Cagayan de Oro City)
šŸ“ Basilan and Tawi-Tawi (held in Zamboanga City)
šŸ“ Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and the SGAs (held in Davao City)

The goal of these discussions is to consolidate local and provincial priorities to strengthen the policy advisory functions of the Bangsamoro Council of Leaders. By bridging the gap between local realities and regional policy, we are working toward a more unified and inclusive leadership under the Chief Minister.

This initiative is part of the BRIDGE 3 Project, which is jointly implemented by The Asia Foundation and the Galing Pook Foundation, with generous support from the UK Government.
