Learning is often seen as something gained in school. But for a farmer-teacher like Eleanor, it begins in the land that shaped her and grows far beyond the classroom.

What lessons can we learn from someone who nurtures both young seedlings and young minds? 🌱 🌾

Seeds sustain food security. But what happens when they begin to favor corporations over the farmers who are the backbone of our nation?

Negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and the Philippines are ongoing. Under this deal, both parties are expected to protect plant variety rights in line with the UPOV Convention.

What does this mean for smallholder farmers who rely on informal seed systems?

It means restricting their ability to save, exchange, and sell seeds—the very practices that have long sustained farming communities and local food systems.

At SEARICE, we believe that empowering farmers must be grounded in policies that recognize and uphold their basic rights.

Seeds belong in the hands of our farmers, and should not be in the control of a few.

No to UPOV!

Seed access empowers farmers to conserve, select, and improve seeds.

When seeds stay with farmers, the future of food stays diverse, resilient, and just.

This International Seed Day, we celebrate the farmers and seeds that keep biodiversity alive. We also call for the protection of farmers’ rights against restrictive policies like UPOV 1991.

He used to sail across seas to make a living. Today, he stays on land while growing food, raising a family, and building a future rooted in farming.

Butz Buerom’s story is one of choice, not circumstance. A choice to return to the land, to practice organic farming, and to find solutions to challenges like seed access alongside fellow farmers.

As farmers like Butz take steps toward seed independence, organic farming, and agroecology, the question remains: how can we better support those who feed us? 🌿

This crop comes in many colors, shapes, and sizes. It’s perfect for those on a diet, those with a sweet tooth, and anyone in need of a nourishing energy source.

Meet sweet potatoes. 🍠

They can be enjoyed simply boiled with sugar, deep-fried like banana cue, or wrapped in lumpia wrappers for an innovative dessert twist.
