While political dynasties play both sides to stay in favor with voters from rival faction strongholds, the people's demands remain unheard and unanswered.

For decades, these powerful families have profited off our poverty, and treated public service as a family business. We cannot rely on them to respond to the needs of the majority.

On May 1, we invite everyone to join the labor day protest to call for an end to the elitist rule of dynasties and forward the interests of the masses for a just and humane society.

Reject Political Dynasties! Atin Ang Bukas!

We, the undersigned individuals, student organizations, and student councils, affirm our campaign to advance a transparent government with strong institutions, a government that places a premium on its citizens’ welfare above all else, and a government that is by the people, for the people.

However, with the current dynastic political system, this kind of government is not possible. The current dynastic political system permeates people’s funds, departments, agencies, and avenues for marginalized representation such as party-lists all for self-interest, cementing power and increasing political capital for already incumbent politicians.

No matter how many progressive bills are turned into laws to be enforced, reform will never come to fruition as long as political dynasties’ self-interest continues to prevail. This self-interest has stolen not only the people’s hard-earned money, but also decades worth of opportunities for poverty alleviation and genuine progress. It is why we, the youth, are now brimming with hunger for change, and we are ready to take back the reins for a just, equitable future.

Multiple candidates for the Senate have promised to bring about this change. However, whether it becomes a reality relies on if and when these senatoriables have filed the anti-dynasty law and successfully pushed it into passage. Such a law would reduce the barriers to entry for public service for those who truly aspire for a government that represents the majority of society, especially students and youth. Legislating a ban on political dynasties will be a key step towards achieving genuine representation and good governance in our country that desperately needs it.

While Article 2, Section 26 of the 1987 Constitution mandates disallowing of political dynasties throughout the government, no enabling law has been passed for the past four decades.. While there have been multiple attempts to actualize it in the sphere of policy, it has always stalled, opposed by the dynasts that are now entrenched in our legislature. Now, Congress is on break, yet none of the incumbent senators – especially incumbent senators running once more to renew their seats – have pushed for it.

We, the Atin Ang Bukas Coalition, echo the sentiments of our fellow young Filipinos in standing against political dynasties. We challenge our current candidates: if you truly uphold change and equitable opportunity for all citizens of our democratic society, then reduce barriers to entry for the marginalized to enter our government and implement policies that represent our interests and welfare.

Senatoriables, we challenge you: if you are truly for genuine change, reject political dynasties! Enact anti-political dynasty into law! Reject political dynasties!

REJECT POLITICAL DYNASTIES! ATIN ANG BUKAS!

Over fifty student leaders from across different colleges and universities joined us for the Atin Ang Bukas Coalition (AABC) launching forum last Saturday, April 26, at the P&G Room, Melchor Hall, UP Diliman. Guest speaker Dr. Julio Teehankee of the DLSU Political Science department highlighted the dominance of political families in the country and the necessity of a broad multisectoral anti-dynasty movement.

The youth and students also shared their experiences living under the same ruling families in their schools, hometowns, and cities, and the grassroots efforts they have undertaken to reject political dynasties and uphold pro-people politics. Together, they signed on the unity statement emphasizing the objective of AABC: challenging the candidates of the upcoming midterm elections to lay the groundwork in dismantling the system that has led to political dynasties once and for all.

Dismantle the Dynasty! Reclaim our Future!

Dynasties continue to dominate our government, especially as the top two officials of the land, their families, and allies endlessly quarrel in the political arena. Instead of taking their jobs seriously, they exploit the genuine concerns of the Filipino people to their advantage, while plundering the public coffers for their warchest in the upcoming elections.

These past weeks, we have seen how these families paint themselves to be representing the interest of the majority of society to be worthy of their vote. Meanwhile, the voices of truly progressive alternative politics are continually maligned and silenced for questioning the ascendance of the ruling dynastic system.

However we, the youth and students, will not choose to ignore their history of consistently representing their self-interest rather than the needs of the people. Each day as election day draws nearer, we must ask ourselves if we should let these same names and families fester in our government.

Should we, as students, let these political dynasties take the reign of our country once more? The choice is ours for the sake of a tomorrow that would grant us the equal ground that new political aspirants need to finally enact meaningful change in our society.

Join us for “Reclaiming Our Future: A Youth Forum on Dismantling Dynasties and Empowering Pro-People Politics,” a forum aimed at understanding how political dynasties remain in power and building a formidable anti-political dynasty movement that reflects the interests of Filipino youth.
