WHEN AN ORDER CREATES AN OPPORTUNITY

This week, HABI: The Philippine Textile Council commissioned KPKK to produce 80 notebook cases and bamboo pen holders as giveaways for its press briefing for the upcoming 16th Likhang HABI Market Fair.

The notebook cases are made from upcycled retaso—fabric offcuts from woven textiles that might otherwise go to waste. What could have been discarded is given another purpose, creating new value from Philippine-made textiles.

For KPKK, every commission is an opportunity to keep community-made products moving, create livelihood opportunities, and demonstrate how sustainability can be part of everyday production.

KPKK operates without external funding. Our growing community is sustained through partnerships, volunteer work, and people who choose to support community-made products.

When a Grassroots Movement Becomes a Case Study.

What happens when a small, volunteer-powered nonprofit movement becomes a subject of academic study?

Three Master in Social Development and Sustainability students from the University of the Philippines Los Baños—Abigail Ann M. Ebreo, Nerissa N. Dimapilis, and Joanne Liezl Q. Nuque— chose KPKK as their case study to understand how we promote community-based social enterprises and sustain our work despite having no external funding or institutional financial support.

Endorsed by Course Coordinator Dr. Dhino B. Geges and noted by Department Chairperson Dr. Ma. Charisma T. Malenab, the students traveled from UPLB to Quezon City to learn directly from our experience—and, just as importantly, to assess how their recommendations may help KPKK strengthen its work moving forward.

For a volunteer-powered movement, being seen, studied, and appreciated by the next generation of social development practitioners is an honor we deeply value.

Sometimes, impact is not measured by how much funding you have, but by how much your work inspires others to ask, “How can we make this better?” 🌱

Beyond Mansalay: What Makes the San Vicente Mangyan Weavers Special?

With DOST-PTRI’s support, the women of San Vicente, Roxas, Oriental Mindoro are proving that preserving tradition does not mean resisting change.

When Mangyan weaving is mentioned, Mansalay is often the community that comes to mind. But in neighboring Roxas, the San Vicente Mangyan Women Weavers Association is quietly building a story of its own.

What sets them apart is their willingness to protect their cultural identity while embracing innovation. They are not simply producing traditional pieces; they actively seek ways to improve their fabrics, welcome collaborations with designers and other makers, and explore how Mangyan artistry can translate into products that meet contemporary markets without losing its cultural character.

That openness is precisely what makes their partnership with DOST - PTRI meaningful. Under Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr., DOST-PTRI continues to connect Philippine weaving communities with science, technology, training, product development, and opportunities to bring their textiles to wider audiences.

The community's growing visibility was reflected at the recently concluded Philippine Handloom Weaving Festival 2026, where the San Vicente weavers received a People’s Choice Award certificate—recognition that came directly from the public who encountered their work.

And behind much of their journey is an equally uncommon kind of local support. Councilor Lucille T. Bacay has gone beyond simply purchasing products or providing transportation assistance. She has helped bring the weavers to opportunities outside their community, accompanied them to Manila, helped manage their booth during PHWF 2026, and worked to connect them with partners who can help strengthen their products and reach.

Even Dr. Leaño himself has been visibly hands-on in rallying public support for weaving communities, including participating in live-selling activities during PHWF 2026.

The lesson from San Vicente is simple: the weavers bring the culture, creativity, and determination. Government support can help open the doors—but it is the community that walks through them.

And when both come together, a traditional craft can become something more: a living culture, a stronger livelihood, and a future shaped by the community itself. 🇵🇭🧵

When Hospitality Makes Room for Purpose.

Not every meaningful partnership begins with a big budget or a mainstream name. Sometimes, it begins with a hotel willing to open its doors, lend its space, and make room for a cause.

Citadines Roces Quezon City, a serviced residence under The Ascott Limited, has chosen to use part of its platform and public spaces to spotlight Filipino creativity, community livelihoods, and cultural traditions.

For KPKK, that matters.

We are a volunteer-powered movement working with communities whose stories, skills, and products do not always find space in mainstream platforms. Having a hospitality establishment recognize the value of that work—and provide a venue where communities can meet the public—is the kind of partnership that creates real visibility.

We are grateful to General Manager Faith Quijano, together with Angelo Nas and Kaidi Borja, for helping make this possible.
