[FILM STILL: FIGHT CLUB]

"The first rule about fight club, is you do not talk about fight club."

In the month of October, the Mental Health Awareness month in the Philippines, we break that rule—because this time, it's okay to talk about the battles that not everyone sees; and do not fret to openly share your feelings with other people you are most comfortable with.

Fight Club (1999) is a classic movie by David Fincher where the main lead, played by Edward Norton, is a depressed man suffering from insomnia and an identity crisis. It's a film that tackles mental health, consumerism, and the search for meaning in a disconnected world. Beneath its chaos and violence lies a deeper commentary on the silent struggles many face—a reminder that acknowledging our pain is the first step toward healing.

If you know someone, or you yourself is in need of mental health services or just someone you can talk to, here are a few hotlines in the Philippines you can reach out to:

NCMH Crisis Hotline: 1800-1888-1553
Bantay Bata Helpline 163
HOPELINE: (02) 8804-4673
Tawag Paglaum - Centro Bisaya: 0966-467-9626

In the ASHS, there are also people who are readily available to help your needs, you can reach out to them through the following contacts:

ASHS Guidance: [email protected]
Mapulon: [email protected]
Psyche: [email protected]

Remember: To become your true self, you must face the chaos within. There is no healing in silence, but rather there is healing when you have the courage to speak up and take action.

[FILM STILL: FALLEN ANGELS]

1995—2 years before the handover of Hong Kong, an event where the British colony of Hong Kong would be transferred back to the Chinese Sovereignty. With this looming event prevailing even beyond politics, Fallen Angels (1995) portrays this anxiety of not only this at the time—with an impending event of the people of Hong Kong—but the claustrophobia, loneliness, and chaos of life in the city. A pseudo sequel of Chungking Express (1994) featuring many callbacks, references, locations and themes from it, the movie is similar, but amplified to eleven. Showcasing the interconnected lives of the 5 main protagonists trying to find romance, peace and friendship in their lives. Director Wong Kar Wai works again with regulars and new personnel, such as cinematographer Christopher Doyle, actors Takeshi Kaneshiro, Karen Mok, Michelle Reis, Leon Lai and Charlie Yeung. Together they capture Hong Kong at this moment in time—a time where life for the people of Hong Kong felt uncertain. If you want to see the chaos and beauty of life of people trying to find solace in their loneliness and isolation, this movie is for you.

[FILM STILL: THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER]

Trigger Warning: Su***de

🎶 We can be heroes, just for one day 🎶👩‍🎤

In honor of World Su***de Prevention Day, we reflect on the coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012). Stephen Chbosky, the author of the book and director of this film, manages to add a realistic portrayal of the characters, drawing from his own personal experiences of finding a home, especially with female and q***r friendships. The film’s beauty stems from its emphasis that we are infinite and that the love for the people who love us and who have yet to love us is more boundless than our pain. As the characters ponder the question, “Why do good people let themselves get treated so badly?” they recognize that they need their friends and family for help. Charlie, our main character, displays this perfectly by turning to his friends, family, teacher, and therapist to live despite it all. If you’ve struggled to navigate mental health issues and your own identity, this film will remind you that you are not alone.

If you know someone you know or you yourself are in need of mental health services or someone to talk to, here are a few hotlines in the Philippines you can reach out to:

NCMH Crisis Hotline: 1800-1888-1553
Bantay Bata Helpline 163
HOPELINE: (02) 8804-4673
Tawag Paglaum - Centro Bisaya: 0966-467-9626

Do not be afraid to take action. Remind yourself and others that someone is always there who cares.

[FILM STILL: PRINCESS MONONOKE]

In celebration of the Season of Creation, we look back on Hayao Miyazaki’s portrayal of the necessary care of the environment through Princess Mononoke (1997). A film set during the Muromachi Period in Japan, a time of violence and urbanization, Miyazaki depicts humanity’s desire to exploit the environment for personal gain, particularly in the context of warfare, as seen in Lady Eboshi and Irontown’s efforts to harness the forest for their warfare industry. The Forest Spirit, whom Lady Eboshi attempts to murder, despite his seemingly peaceful nature, brings forth death, endangering not only the forest’s creatures but also the people of Irontown. Through Miyazaki’s understanding of the interconnectedness of the environment and humanity, Princess Mononoke warns us that if humanity continues or ultimately wins the war against the environment, there is no winner, only losers who will feel the wrath and fury of Mother Nature’s death.

“We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it. We have had enough of immorality and the mockery of ethics, goodness, faith and honesty. It is time to acknowledge that light-hearted superficiality has done us no good. When the foundations of social life are corroded, what ensues are battles over conflicting interests, new forms of violence and brutality, and obstacles to the growth of a genuine culture of care for the environment.” - Pope Francis, Laudato Si: On Care of Our Common Home

[FILM STILL: THE FABLEMANS]

Reflecting on his past and why he is who he is, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans (2022) serves as the thesis statement of his entire career. Focusing on the growth of Sammy Fabelman and his relationship with film and family, all of Spielberg’s thoughts and themes, from Alan Grant’s fear of technology in Jurassic Park (1993) while reflecting on his father’s work, Schindler’s List (1993) and his Jewish background, to a broken family with Elliot’s longing for family in ET (1982). This film is a highlight of Spielberg’s late career and an essential watch to understand the genius behind some of your favorite movies.

[FILM STILL: SUPERMAN]

🎶 ’Cause I’m a punk rocker, yes, I am 🎶

After Zack Snyder’s era of dark and gritty Superman portrayed by Henry Cavill, James Gunn is now transitioning the DCEU to the DCU with David Corenswet’s Superman—a down-to-earth, punk rocker who sees the good in humanity. Superman (2025) provides a positive, refreshing change in a world where it’s easy to be sour (or a Lex Luther if you will). Gunn’s Superman film is a stark departure from Snyder’s, with Superman donning a bright suit and straying away from a gloomy color grading to a more vibrant look. Walking out of Superman, you feel like you’re flying like Superman with the hope of changing the world for the better and being a person for others.

[FILM STILL: KISAPMATA]

Just as films have made a significant impact in our lives, so have the people who have dedicated their lives to crafting stories that leave a lasting impact in our hearts. Let us honor Mike de Leon, who passed away just yesterday, for sparking fires in the hearts of Filipinos with his fierce political and social commentary through his films. Thank you, Direk Mike.
