BREWING SOLUTIONS โ
What began as a simple problem, finding a cafรฉ that truly matches what someone needs, became a growing student-built platform with thousands of locations across the Philippines.
John Benedict Badilla, a Computer Science student at Quezon City University, developed โAno, Tara Kape?โ, a web and mobile cafรฉ-discovery platform designed to bring information often scattered across different services into one place. Badillaโs public project post states that its database has grown to more than 5,200 cafรฉs nationwide.
Users can search for nearby cafรฉs and check menus, photos, operating hours, ratings, amenities, weather information, favorites, and community reviews. The platform also includes KapeAI for cafรฉ recommendations and navigation for driving, cycling, walking, and public transportation through Sakay.ph.
Building the project while studying pushed Badilla beyond programmingโfrom database management and geospatial information to user experience, testing, and maintaining an expanding cafรฉ directory.
For him, one of the biggest lessons was that meaningful projects do not have to begin with a huge idea. Progress can be fixing one bug, adding one feature, or listening to one piece of feedback.
The 5,200+ cafรฉ count is not an endpoint. Badilla says he continues expanding the database and improving the platform one update at a time.
For students building something of their own, his message is simple: start with a problem you genuinely care about, learn as you go, and never underestimate what a small idea can become.
