Philippine Coral Bleaching Watch

Philippine Coral Bleaching Watch This page aims to map out and monitor coral health in the Philippines through the contributions of c We thank you for being our eyes underwater.

Coral bleaching is when corals turn white due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This page aims to map out and monitor coral health and bleaching events in the Philippines through your help. Report your findings, whether bleached or healthy, to http://tinyurl.com/phbleaching. By reporting state of our reefs, scientists will be able to find out the extent of damage due to El Niรฑo and climate change. For the coral reefs of the Philippines.

24 September 2025 Bleaching Alert Update

Alert level โ€˜Watchโ€™ (Yellow) across several areas in the Philippines which means that bleaching is likely to progress.

Possible bleaching with Alert Level โ€˜Warningโ€™ (Orange) in some parts of North Eastern Luzon and Southern Mindanao

For patrollers who have access to a reef, please be our eyes underwater and continue to MONITOR OUR REEFS for bleaching or no bleaching. ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ  We also need to monitor our healthy reefs!

We are transitioning to a new reporting platform, kindly send photos for validation, and documentation at this form link: https://tinyurl.com/phcoralreefreport

Here is the Bleaching Alert Level guide based on NOAA.

๐ŸŸจ Alert level โ€˜Watchโ€™ - Yellow (low thermal stress, possible bleaching is likely to progress)
๐ŸŸงAlert level โ€˜Warningโ€™ - Orange(thermal stress accumulating, possible bleaching)
๐ŸŸฅAlert level 1 - Red (bleaching expected, bleaching likely happening)
๐ŸŸฅ ๐Ÿ”ฅAlert level 2 - Dark Red (significant bleaching expected, coral mortality likely)

For those who already submitted reports, continue to monitor whether previously bleached reefs have recovered in your area, and submit a report again for us to properly document recovery. These stories of recovery could give us hope and could save Philippine reefs in the long run! ๐Ÿ™‚

What is CORAL BLEACHING? ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ

Coral bleaching is a response to an environmental stress including changes in ocean temperature, coral predation, coral diseases, pollution, among others. During a bleaching event, corals expel zooxanthellae (their source of nutrients) to relieve itself from the stress, and as a result, the corals will lose their color and appear to be white or pale. Massive coral bleaching occurs where there are unusually high sea surface temperature (SST) called SST anomalies.

Today is Earth Day (April 22)

This Earth Day, let us be reminded of how fragile and vital coral reefs areโ€”bustling cities beneath the sea, teeming with life, yet threatened by warming oceans, coral bleaching, and ocean pollution, among others. Letโ€™s protect what protects us.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, and climate resilience. ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ

After a coral bleaching event, MPAs can help coral reefs recover from bleaching by protecting the reef from other stressors.
