โ ๏ธ 21 May 2025 Bleaching Alert Update
Heat stress ๐ฅcontinues to accumulate in Northern Luzon including Ilocos, Cagayan, Quezon, Pangasinan, Zambales, Palawan, Mindoro, Bicol, Masbate, parts of Central Visayas including Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Southern Mindanao particularly off Sibuguey Bay, Zambaonga, Basilan and Davao Gulf. Refer to the map for more detailed areas.
For patrollers who have access to a reef, please be our eyes underwater and continue to MONITOR OUR REEFS for bleaching or no bleaching. ๐๐

Here is the Bleaching Alert Level guide based on NOAA.
๐จ Alert level โWatchโ - Yellow (low thermal stress, possible bleaching is likely to progress)
๐งAlert level โWarningโ - Orange(thermal stress accumulating, possible bleaching)
๐ฅAlert level 1 - Red (bleaching expected, bleaching likely happening)
๐ฅ ๐ฅAlert level 2 - Dark Red (significant bleaching expected, coral mortality likely)
For those who already submitted reports, continue to monitor whether previously bleached reefs have recovered in your area, and submit a report again for us to properly document recovery. These stories of recovery could give us hope and could save Philippine reefs in the long run! ๐

What is CORAL BLEACHING? ๐๐
Coral bleaching is a response to an environmental stress including changes in ocean temperature, coral predation, coral diseases, pollution, among others. During a bleaching event, corals expel zooxanthellae (their source of nutrients) to relieve itself from the stress, and as a result, the corals will lose their color and appear to be white or pale. Massive coral bleaching occurs where there are unusually high sea surface temperature (SST) called SST anomalies.
