Teachers play an important role in helping young people build the knowledge, confidence, and values they need for the future.

On August 8–9, 2026, 32 participants gathered in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras for the Aflatoun Teachers’ Training, organized in partnership with the Guimaras Brethren Multi-purpose Cooperative- GBMPC (GBMPC). The two-day activity introduced educators to the Aflatoun approach and provided practical insights on integrating social and financial education into their teaching.

Participating schools included:

1. Igdarapdap Elementary School
2. Salvacion Central School
3. Lanipe Elementary School
4. Calaya Elementary School
5. San Antonio Elementary School
6. Oracon Norte Elementary School
7. Paaralan ng Buhay ng La Orca
8. Cabalagnan Elementary School

Facilitated by Ms. Whiazel Nangpi, OIC – Advocacy Unit Head of NATCCO, the training encouraged participants to explore ways of making learning more meaningful and relevant to children and young people. The activity was conducted with the coordination and approval of the Department of Education – Division of Guimaras, with the support of Ms. Girlie Lero, Chairperson of the GBMPC Board of Directors, and Ms. Mary Jane Ganarias, General Manager of GBMPC

On July 25, 2026, the NATCCO Children and Youth conducted a webinar titled "Gardening 101: Getting Started with the Basics." Here, we learned from Ms. Justice Marie Paala of the DENR that urban gardening is far more than just a hobby; it is the practice of growing plants, vegetables, and herbs within urban areas using available spaces like rooftops, balconies, and community gardens.

Unlike urban farming, which requires substantial investment and advanced techniques, urban gardening is a low-cost and low-maintenance way to foster food security and environmental health.

Ms. Paala emphasizes that these green spaces are critical because they address urban heat, support biodiversity, and reduce waste through composting. When individuals engage in gardening, they gain fresh produce for human consumption, education, and a significant source of stress relief and recreation. Furthermore, she highlighted that success in gardening is not about a "gifted hand," as the "green thumb" is a myth; instead, it is about understanding and meeting a plant's basic requirements for sunlight, porous soil, and proper watering.

Ultimately, the core message is that you do not need a large farm or extensive resources to make a difference; you simply need to "start small and work your way up," building your garden one plant at a time.

As members of the cooperative community, we understand that our strength lies in our shared responsibility to care for one another and our environment. Let’s bring this spirit of cooperation to our youth by participating in initiatives like the DENR Community Pan-TREE, which provides free seedlings of fruit-bearing and vegetable plants to promote urban greening. By cultivating these gardens today, we are not just growing food; we are actively shaping a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the next generation.

Last July 17, 2026, young participants gathered via Zoom for another meaningful session titled “Seeing Ability Beyond Disability: Breaking Myths and Misconceptions.” ♿💙✨

The webinar featured Atty. Joyce Marie Marapao, who shared valuable insights on disability inclusion, equal rights, and the importance of breaking stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding persons with disabilities.

During the session, participants learned that disability does not define a person’s worth, potential, or ability to contribute to society. Atty. Marapao discussed common myths about disability
and explained how these misconceptions often create barriers to inclusion, education, employment, and meaningful participation in the community.

The discussion emphasized the importance of using respectful language, promoting accessibility, and creating environments where everyone is valued and given equal opportunities. Participants were encouraged to become allies and advocates for inclusion by challenging discriminatory attitudes and supporting policies and practices that uphold the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

One of the key takeaways from the webinar was that true inclusion begins with understanding, empathy, and action. Through practical examples and meaningful conversations, the session inspired
young people to look beyond limitations and recognize the unique strengths, talents, and contributions of every individual.

The webinar concluded with participants gaining a deeper appreciation of diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility. The session empowered young individuals to help build communities that are more accessible, compassionate, and inclusive for all. 🌟

On July 13, 2026 the NATCCO Children and Youth conducted a webinar titled Safe Spaces for Children. Here, we learned from Ms. Jhin that a safe space is far more than just a physical location protected from danger; it is a supportive environment where a child feels listened to, respected, accepted, and valued.

Ms. Jhin emphasizes that these safe spaces are critical because fear and anxiety hinder a child's ability to learn and grow. When children feel secure, they can focus better, participate more freely, and develop the confidence needed to solve problems and build healthy relationships. Furthermore, Ms. Jhin highlighted that safety can be compromised through both harm by action (such as bullying or corporal punishment) and harm by inaction, which occurs when adults ignore signs of distress, fail to respond to a child's needs, or remain indifferent to potential danger

To support children effectively, we adults were encouraged to use the 3L method: Listen, Let them speak, and Link to support, which prioritizes giving a child undivided attention without interrogation and connecting them to necessary resources. Ultimately, the core message is that every child deserves at least one "safe adult". This role does not require being a perfect person, but rather a consistent presence who chooses every day to listen, guide, and protect the well-being of the children in their care

As members of the cooperative community, we understand that our strength lies in our shared responsibility to care for one another. Let’s bring this spirit of cooperation to our youth by committing to be the "Safe Adults" they need to thrive. By building safe spaces within our cooperatives and homes, we are not just protecting children today; we are actively shaping the empowered, respectful leaders of the next generation. The NATCCO Children and Youth Team successfully conducted the Aflatoun Training of Trainers (TOT) in partnership with DCCCO Youth Zone Laboratory Cooperative last July 11–12, 2026 at DCCCO Hotel, Dumaguete City. The two-day training gathered DCCCO's Member Specialists and Officers, who are now officially part of the growing Aflatoun Network as NATCCO's newest batch of Aflatoun National Trainers.

Facilitated by Dr. Mylene Gocon, with co-facilitation by Hazel Ann Leñida-Maigting, Training Officer of the NATCCO Children and Youth Team, the training equipped participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to implement the Aflatoun Program in their respective communities. The sessions covered the fundamentals of the Aflatoun Program, Child Social and Financial Education (CSFE), the Five Core Elements of Aflatoun, child-centered and participatory learning approaches, cooperative roles in youth engagement and savings mobilization, building partnerships with schools and communities, and facilitation skills for orientations and learning sessions. Through interactive workshops, group activities, and practice facilitation, participants gained practical experience in delivering engaging learning sessions for children and youth.

With this newest group of certified trainers, NATCCO continues to strengthen its commitment to expanding social and financial education across the country. By empowering cooperative leaders and staff to become effective facilitators, the Aflatoun Program reaches more children, youth, families, and schools—helping nurture financially responsible, socially aware, and active citizens who can create positive change in their communities. Together with DCCCO Multi-Purpose Cooperative, we look forward to seeing more young Filipinos grow, lead, and thrive through the Aflatoun journey.
