KMI contributed heavily to the PPS POGS PSNbM PAP sponsored Mother & Baby Dialogues Series 6 entitled Gatas ng Ina: Proteksiyon sa Panahon ng Sakuna, held at the AFP MEdical Center. Thank you to Surgeon General Brigadier General Fatima Claure Navarro for spearheading this event! Thank you Dr Joanne Datangel-Gallardo who discussed the findings of her research on Relactation, Dr Au Libadia for coordinating the preparations, Dr Maria Asuncion Silvestre for presenting the narrative of IFE over several disaster contexts and also Dr Espina for describing the situation at ground zero at EVRMC and Tacloban City at the time of Supertyphoon Haiyan.

KMI hopes that the experiences and lessons we shared on Infant Feeding in Emergencies helps all our sheroes and heroes of the Philippine Military in their brave frontline efforts whatever the natural or man-made calamity.

Together with the AIHO, KMI contributed heavily to the design and dissemination of the PhilHealth Z Package for Preterm or Small Newborns. Yesterday, KMI participated in the Co-Design/Enhancement of the said Package and also the Newborn Care Package (NCP) upon invitation of Health Systems Insight (HSI) and UNICEF Health.

KMI looks forward to the brighter future for all Filipino newborns and their mothers 🌷💕🇵🇭

Open Letter of Healthcare Leaders to Executive Secretary Ralph G. Recto against Unequal PhilHealth benefits

Dear Executive Secretary Ralph G. Recto,

As healthcare professionals, we care for Filipinos from every walk of life. We do not see them as direct or indirect contributors. We see them as patients who need our care. That is why we are deeply concerned by your proposal to provide different PhilHealth benefits for direct and indirect contributors.

The Universal Health Care Act was never intended to divide Filipinos into different tiers of health protection. Its guiding principles recognize the contributions of all workers while also giving priority to those who cannot afford to pay. These are not competing rights - they are complementary principles that ensure every Filipino is protected.

We understand that many working Filipinos feel they are not receiving enough benefits in return for the premiums they pay. This is not because indigent patients receive too much, or to use your own words, “panalo sila”. This is because government is failing to shoulder its lawful share in financing the premiums of the poor. As a result, direct contributors end up paying for a larger share of the country's health care than the law intended. Creating a separate tier of PhilHealth benefits does not solve that problem. It simply shifts attention away from the real problem - government's failure to meet its obligations under the Universal Health Care Act.

The solution is clear - government must stop diverting PhilHealth funds, and it must stop underfunding PhilHealth. If government fulfills its obligations under the Universal Health Care Act, PhilHealth can strengthen benefits for every Filipino, rather than just a few.

Mr. Secretary, we will be happy to discuss these issues with you if you have time to meet us. Healthcare should unite us, not divide us. No Filipino should have to choose between protecting the worker who pays premiums and the poor patient who cannot. Our duty as healthcare professionals is to care for both. We ask our government to do the same.

The week that was ...
DOH CHD for CALABARZON (Region 4A), through its Nutrition and Breastfeeding Program, undertook "Unified Action for Mother-Baby Friendly CALABARZON Through Medical Society Collaboration," on 16-17 June 2026!
Together with Arugaan's Nanay Ines Avellana-fernandez, KMI Dr Au Libadia and Dr Maria Asuncion Silvestre lent support to DOH 4A, to help clarify some implementation issues of the MBFHI Program, for the professional society representatives present - the PPS Southern Tagalog Chapter, other PPS Clusters, the PSNbM, PSMFM, POGS, PAP and the PSBLM. Among the legal mandates dicussed were Recommendations of WHA Resolution 69.9 articulated in Republic Act 11148 Objective g).
