Throwback: Where the Journey Began

In this photo, we see Micah Parico, ABCf’s very first employee, surrounded by our first-ever scholar beneficiaries. At the time, our mission started small but with a big heart, focusing on providing support to preschool children.

What began as a commitment to early childhood development has grown alongside our students. From those first preschool steps, A Better Chance Foundation has evolved to meet the changing needs of our community.

Today, we are proud to share that our mission has transformed to support college scholars, helping young adults navigate their higher education journey and reach their professional dreams.

From 2001 to today, our goal remains the same: creating a better chance for every student, one milestone at a time. This throwback photo reminds us of how far we've come as we approach a very special milestone. Stay tuned as we prepare to celebrate 25 years of making a difference!

Strengthening a long-standing partnership for education.

On April 15, A Better Chance Foundation (ABCf) and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) formally renewed their Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on the scholarship program in a signing held at the ARCDO Conference Room, Mabini Campus, PUP Sta. Mesa.

Signing on behalf of PUP was Prof. Tomas O. Testor, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, while Mr. Jericho P. Orlina, President of ABCf, signed for the Foundation. Also present was the Director of the Office of Scholarship and Financial Assistance (OSFA), Prof. Ana Liza R. Publico, who shared an overview of the partnership and its continued impact on students, as well as ABCf Development Manager, Ms. Dinna Z. Sarmiento.

This collaboration traces its roots back to 2018, when the first batch of ABCf’s Night High scholars graduated. At that time, ABCf made a pivotal decision to support outstanding graduates through college scholarships—marking the beginning of its focus on higher education. Since then, the partnership with PUP has played a key role in identifying and supporting deserving students who become part of the ABCf scholarship community.

The MOA renewal reflects a shared commitment to continue opening doors for students and helping them complete their college education.

Here’s to more years of working together to give more young people a better chance.

Supporting our scholars, one step at a time.

Our Education on Wheels (EOW) scholars have received their stipends for the 1st and 2nd semesters of SY 2025–2026, along with school supplies for the second semester, including yellow pads and steno notebooks.

The Education on Wheels (EOW) Program is a partnership that brings accessible college education closer to underserved communities through the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Open University System, in collaboration with Upskills+ Foundation. Designed to support out-of-school youth and community-based learners, the program allows students to pursue their studies through flexible, community-based learning setups.

Through this initiative, ABCf helps ensure that scholars not only have access to education, but also the support they need to stay on track—from stipends to basic school supplies.

A simple distribution, but an important reminder: with the right support, our scholars can keep moving forward.

A new look, the same heart 💚

We’re excited to share the new ABCf logo! When we began in 2001, our logo featured young children—reflecting the scholars we first supported as they took their earliest steps in education. Today, our scholars have grown, and so have we.

Our new logo now features a graduation toga, symbolizing that many of our scholars are college students, working hard toward degrees and brighter futures. While the look has evolved, our mission remains the same: opening doors to opportunity and walking alongside our scholars every step of the way.

As we head into 2026—our 25th year—we’re also unveiling a special anniversary logo created to mark this milestone, with “25” proudly displayed. It’s a celebration of the journey we’ve shared with our scholars, donors, and partners over the past two and a half decades.

Thank you for being part of the ABCf story—then, now, and as we move forward together.

Still reflecting on yesterday’s laptop handover—and the partnerships that made it possible.

Macquarie Group Foundation completed the distribution of 100 refurbished laptops to students under its scholarship program. The handover was carried out in the presence of A Better Chance Foundation (ABCf) and Upskills+ Foundation, partners who have worked closely with Macquarie for many years in supporting scholars. Formerly used by Macquarie employees, the laptops were restored and prepared to help students meet the academic and digital requirements of their college studies.

In her message, ABCf Chairperson Ms. Nora de Guzman spoke about the importance of making the most of the opportunities given to them and how these chances are strengthened through partnerships. She shared that ABCf’s partnership with Macquarie began in 2012 and has endured through both stable and challenging times. During the pandemic, the number of Macquarie-supported scholars under ABCf grew to more than 100—a testament to the company’s continued commitment. Beyond monthly allowances, Macquarie has expanded its support to include the donation of laptops and opportunities such as the community internship program, reinforcing a shared goal of helping transform lives through education.

One of the recipients, Aera Maine Landicho, an ABCf and Upskills+ scholar, shared what the laptop donation means to her:

“As a student who has always been anxious on how I am going to sustain attending school with the insufficient resources for school, this laptop is not just a big help to my study but also a motivation to always do well in school not just for me and my family, but also for the people who continue to support and create change to my fellow scholars lives.”

After nearly a year of coordination, documentation, and refurbishment, a long-awaited milestone was finally reached today.

On January 14, the Macquarie Group Foundation formally handed over 100 refurbished laptops to its sponsored scholars from ABCf and Upskills+ Foundation. The laptops — previously used by Macquarie staff — were carefully refurbished to support the academic needs of students.

In her message, Ms. Len Lapuz-De Guzman, Macquarie Philippines Joint Country Lead and Head of COG Manila, shared:

“These laptops have gone through a lot of ups and downs. Please make use of those laptops to help accomplish your dreams. We are happy to be part of your journey.”

One of the recipient scholars, Heart Trinidad, delivered a heartfelt message on behalf of the scholars. Her words capture what this donation truly means:

"I’m Criselle, or you may call me Heart, and I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude and renewed hope. I am currently a fourth-year student, and reaching this stage of my academic journey has not been easy. Despite the challenges, it has been a meaningful and worthwhile experience.

Like many students, I faced several difficulties while studying. One of the most challenging was continuing my education with limited access to a computer that is essential for school requirements. In today’s academic environment, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, a computer is no longer just a tool—it is a necessity. Our classes, research papers, activities, and requirements are largely done online.

There were times when I had to wait until my mother finished her work before I could start mine, using her laptop late at night and finishing before she left for work the next morning. For context, She is a teacher, and I am a student, so sharing her device was not always possible. During face-to-face classes, I was also fortunate enough to borrow my friends’ laptops after they had completed their own tasks, especially during activities that required us to bring our own devices.

That is why receiving this computer at the beginning of the year makes this moment even more meaningful. It is truly a precious gift and a joyful way to start the year—with hope, opportunity, and renewed motivation. This computer is not just a device; it is encouragement to face the challenges ahead with a more positive outlook in life.

Because of the scholarship from the Macquarie Group Foundation, through ABC Foundation, another significant burden has been lifted off my shoulders. I can now focus more on my studies, work more efficiently, and complete my requirements with greater confidence and less pressure. This gift reminds me that despite life’s hardships, there are people who believe in students like me and are willing to invest in our future."
