Step up collaboration to end child labor

June 12 marks World Day Against Child Labor. Globally, an estimated 160 million children are engaged in child labor, with agriculture accounting for 70 percent of this total.

Child labor is a salient human rights issue in many sectors and countries where DIWA operates. In the Philippines, DIWA’s work in the coconut sector has highlighted the prevalence of child labor across the coconut supply chain and how it intersects with other human rights issues such as precarious employment, occupational health and safety, and fair compensation.

DIWA’s work in coconut—including research, human rights impact assessments, capacity building, and community engagement—is grounded in local context and multistakeholder partnerships. Consisting of four (4) nongovernment organizations, two (2) companies, and two (2) industry associations, The Fund Against Child Labour (FBK) Consortium, as a multistakeholder initiative, has brought people with diverse backgrounds and expertise together to begin to address the root causes of child labor in the coconut sector.

In the context of widespread informality and a complex supply chain, we’ve learned that policy commitments aimed at eliminating child labor face barriers in implementation. Efforts to build relationships, shared language, and common values between upstream and downstream stakeholders, between rightsholders and business, is critical.

Meet Dexter “Dee” Delfin, community organizer and DIWA’s field coordinator in Mindanao, located in the southern Philippines, one of the top coconut-producing regions in the world. In this video, Dee explains DIWA’s approach from risk assessment to community-led solutions.

“Training and education are prime points of opportunity for collaboration in Japan at this juncture when the country’s HRDD landscape is shifting and evolving. Apart from bringing its expertise and experience to the table, DIWA intends to develop long-term, sustainable relationships with Japanese business and other stakeholders to effect real change.”

DIWA contributed an article entitled “Illuminating Impacts of Business on Human Rights: Initiatives in Human Rights Education” to a Japanese human rights journal produced by Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Center HURIGHTS Osaka. We are pleased our experience is included in their annual publication showcasing perspectives and work from across the region with a focus on the role of education in the promotion of human rights.

DIWA, as a women-led organization, has always used an intersectional approach to how we work, unpacking and making visible the many ways that women continue to be vulnerable in the workplace. This month we join the call to “Accelerate Action” by sharing key insights on integrating women’s rights into .

⏭️ Please read more in this memo on discrimination and gender-based harassment and violence at work - and how responsible businesses can bring more women to the table and promote a culture of safety and respect for women in their workplace.

Women’s Month is a chance to recenter women’s experiences and raise issues that matter to women. DIWA’s experience in the field indicate that women face distinct challenges while working in the palm oil, cacao, seafood, apparel, electronics, and other sectors.

🙌 Happy New Year from our team at DIWA!

2024 was a milestone year for us as 📢 Dignity in Work for All. There’s a lot on the horizon for 2025, another milestone year for us as we will celebrate our 20th anniversary in October! 💎

2025 will also be a critical year for companies that need to set up due diligence mechanisms in line with incoming regulations.

There is no time to waste and we are here to help connect the dots between the Code of Conduct, supplier engagement and improvements to management systems that can move the needle for worker rights.

2024 was a milestone year for DIWA. Some highlights include:

- Rebranding to Dignity in Work for All and launching a new website and social media presence

- Publishing the report and toolkit: Implementing Ethical Standards in the In-Country Recruitment of Migrant Workers in Thailand

- Attending dozens of fora to advance dignity in the workplace
Dedicating thousands of hours, boots on the ground, in 144 factories and plantations to understand key issues and conduct social audits for major brands in apparel, footwear, electronics, agriculture, seafood and more

- Helping build the capacity of 350+ participants from major companies and suppliers in line with best practices in HRDD

- Training 39 lead auditors for social responsibility

- Partnering with 3 NGOs to conduct and publish groundbreaking research

- Launching key partnerships in Japan for sustainability and human rights in seafood

- Partnering with the Sustainable Coconut Partnership for a high-level human rights and living income assessment in Indonesia and the Philippines

There’s a lot on the horizon for 2025, another milestone year for us as we will celebrate our 20th anniversary in October.

The past 20 years we have deepened the conversation on business and human rights. We are known for thought leadership and real partnerships for results. But we have not given as much time to external communication. This year, we want to open up a little and share our two decades of experience in implementing best-in-class social auditing and capacity-building programs for suppliers in factories and plantations, on boats and on farms.

2025 will be a critical year for companies that need to set up due diligence mechanisms in line with incoming regulations.

There is no time to waste and we are here to help connect the dots between the Code of Conduct, supplier engagement and improvements to management systems that can move the needle for worker rights.

As the clock ticks down for mandatory due diligence, we recommend that companies find ways to avoid drowning in the technicalities. Rather, the focus should be on real engagement with suppliers and rights holders in the chain of activities.

Real partnership and better lines of sight will be key to track progress from baseline and ensure workers in the upstream benefit from the regulatory momentum for HRDD.

It's been a very hot summer across Asia this year with heatwaves making news and prompting school and business closures.

The ILO recently published a report looking at the effects of climate change on health & safety at work. Particularly in agriculture, many workers are subject to intense heat which is expected to increase as heatwaves worsen with climate change.

Our team at Dignity knows from the ground that heat stress is a labour rights issue. We've worked in agricultural supply chains to enhance worker safety including setting up water and rest stations on farms and plantations.

We know that as risks change management systems need to change too. Now, more than ever, businesses need systems in place that can assess risks, ensure worker needs are communicated, and take action to prevent harm.
