The Climate Change Network for Community based-initiatives (CCNCI) vehemently condemns the ecocide of the DENR and SMC as there is no justification for cutting trees.
We acknowledge that the temporary suspension of the tree-cutting is a product of the collective action of civil society; however, the DENR must be held accountable for providing permits to ecologically destructive projects. Consistently, DENR remains a mouthpiece for the corporate greed of the largest conglomerates in the Philippines. Contrary to its mandate, it is the number 1 perpetrator for widespread environmental destruction.
From mining to mass deforestation, the incompetence of DENR knows no end and must be held accountable for their crimes against the environment. With over 225 trees toppled, relocation and reforestation would take decades before the damages can be recuperated. We do not have the luxury of time, especially when we are facing climate-induced disasters that only continue to grow more potent.
The communities of our most fundamental sectors are facing heavy flooding, intense heatwaves, and growing pollution. Trees are proven to be one of the most effective ways to combat climate change yet our government institutions continue the mass slaughter of our ecology.
It is in this manner that we call upon Filipinos to continue to voice their discontent and amplify the continued struggle for climate justice as it has become increasingly apparent that the biggest barricade to a prosperous ecology is the government institution that was tasked to protect it.
