Mechanisms to transition to renewable energy are already within reach.

See how Dr. Yanga's Colleges, Inc. & DYCI for Sustainability is turning commitment into action by powering its buildings through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), with expansion toward Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA).

As we continue to document how these transitions are happening, GEOP in Action, presented by 350 Pilipinas in partnership with Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, shows how businesses and institutions can make sustainable energy choices. It highlights the benefits, including cost savings and ease of transition, provides a clear narrative of how organizations switch to renewable energy, recognizes existing barriers, and encourages wider adoption across the sector.

A practical pathway for institutions ready to lead on sustainability.

As conversations on building sustainable transport systems continue at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Asia and the Pacific Transport Forum 2026, we emphasize the need to create pathways that genuinely benefit communities most affected by the transport crisis.

Centering these communities is critical to ensuring that development investments are directed toward inclusive, low-carbon solutions.

Dr. Yanga's Colleges, Inc. is one of the educational institutions powered through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). Through sustained engagement with 350 Pilipinas, it has strengthened its sustainability commitments by bringing renewable energy to its classrooms and offices through GEOP.

Existing policy mechanisms under the Renewable Energy (RE) Act enable bulk energy consumers to source renewable energy. In doing so, institutions are given options to transition to cleaner energy sources. For DYCI for Sustainability, GEOP opened an opportunity to transition to renewable energy. It became a way for the institution to explore different energy options, eventually leading to the securing of contracts under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA).

When large consumers move away from fossil fuel dependency, it drives significant changes in energy markets, operational costs, and environmental outcomes. This shift also helps accelerate the broader and faster adoption of clean energy across the economy.

Access to energy remains limited in the Dumagat-Remontado community. No households connected to the grid, as most of them rely on batteries and small solar-powered devices for lighting and basic needs.

During our community visit and energy needs assessment, we learned that their livelihoods rely on farming and gathering crops, which are sold in markets with high transport costs. Some community members also barter their produce to afford batteries and other essentials. The community identified electricity as a tool to improve livelihoods and education. Access to energy would allow them to process crops, such as turning turmeric into powder, and add value to what they produce.

Energy is also important for education. Spaces like the Paadelan e Denomagat need reliable electricity to support learning. Basic access, such as charging flashlights, already affects how students study and how households function at night.

As we continue our community-building work with the Dumagat-Remontado Indigenous Peoples in Tanay, Rizal, we have learned that they collectively view access to energy not only as a means to power their homes, but also to sustain their community and their alternative learning space, the Paadelan e Denomagat. With the guidance of community leaders, we conducted an energy needs assessment last May, 9, 2026, which included navigating the area, identifying challenges to energy access, and consultation for potential application of a community-led renewable energy system.

Our ongoing partnership with the PUP Institute of Technology Research and Extension faculty and ITech students has enabled us to pilot projects that are now extending to communities, guided by a shared goal of ensuring access to energy and exploring community-led initiatives on renewable energy access.

Since May 1, the installation and pilot testing of a community-owned solar energy system have been carried out in Barangay 159, Tondo, Manila. Developed by students from the PUP Institute of Technology Research and Extension the upcoming charging station aims to provide immediate and free access to renewable energy.

From concept up to charging station testing, it is centered on community ownership and sustainability with PUP students and Theo sa Bahay exchanged how the system can be operated, maintained, and maximized for the benefit of the community.

The project is a collective action among members of Barangay 159 in Tondo, Theo sa Bahay, PUP Institute of Technology students, guided by PUP ITech faculty members with renewable energy integrated into the curriculum., and with support from 350 Pilipinas. Partners remain in constant coordination with the LGU, Barangay 159 officials, and Theo sa Bahay in preparation for the upcoming launch.

More information will follow as community visits and installation activities continue.
