In his valedictory speech, College of Engineering's laureate from the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Mr. Jhonvoy T. Macatangay shared a heartfelt speech, giving an ode to the journey he went through for the past four years.
As a future engineer, he challenged the rest of the graduates to protect the dignity of the profession, to choose integrity when dishonesty is easier, to choose compassion when indifference is convenient, and to choose what is right, even when no one is watching.
He also reminded everyone that they are humans at the end of the dayโthey fall and make mistakes, but they will never stop trying. Quoting a Japanese proverb, "Fall seven times, stand up eight," he urged everyone to remember that if Plan A fails, there are still 25 other letters.
However, still grounded in accountability, he emphasized that mistakes come with a responsibility to uphold. It should not be use an excuse to continuously make lapses, but to serve as a driving force to be better.
Macatangay is a feat in history, being one of the few Magna Cum Laude awardees in the roster of Engineering graduates. His journey serves as a proof that students do not have to function like machines, as persistence outlives perfection.
