STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY

"We stand in solidarity with this important effort to uphold environmental accountability.

The gravest forms of environmental destruction rarely result from a single unlawful act. More often, they arise from a chain of decisions, regulatory failures, weak enforcement, and the gradual erosion of legal safeguards intended to protect ecosystems and communities. When accountability is absent, environmental harm accumulates until its consequences become severe, widespread, and, in some cases, irreversible.

The complaints filed before the Office of the Ombudsman remind us that existing laws on environmental protection, public procurement, anti-graft, and land use remain indispensable tools for demanding accountability. At the same time, they invite us to reflect on whether our legal framework is fully equipped to address the most serious forms of environmental destruction, especially when responsibility is diffused among multiple actors and institutions.

Our criminal justice system is founded on the principle that there is no crime without a law defining and punishing it. Precisely for this reason, efforts to strengthen environmental accountability should also include an honest conversation on whether Philippine law ought to recognize and penalize the gravest forms of ecological destruction through a distinct offense, while ensuring that such legislation remains faithful to constitutional principles, due process, and the rule of law.

Protecting our environment requires more than responding after damage has occurred. It requires integrity in public decision-making, meaningful environmental oversight, transparency, and accountability at every level. Every action that strengthens these principles brings us closer to a legal system capable not only of remedying environmental harm, but of preventing catastrophic ecological destruction before it occurs."

Day 2 of the 2026 Rights of Nature Philippines General Assembly marked an important step in strengthening the movement for ecological justice.

Participants reflected on the progress of the Rights of Nature movement, discussed ways to strengthen collaboration across sectors, and mapped out priorities for 2026–2028. Key discussions focused on advancing the Rights of Nature Bill, promoting local policy initiatives, expanding education and community engagement, and reinforcing partnerships among Indigenous Peoples, youth, academia, legal practitioners, faith-based groups, NGOs, and environmental advocates.

The assembly also reaffirmed the Rights of Nature PH Code of Ethics, recognizing that nature possesses inherent rights that exist beyond its usefulness to humans. This shared commitment will continue to guide the movement's collective actions toward protecting ecosystems and upholding ecological integrity.

As the General Assembly concluded, participants renewed their commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive, and coordinated movement that advances the Rights of Nature and works toward a just and sustainable future for people and the planet. 🌏💚

Nestled between the mountain ranges of Mt. Kitanglad and Mt. Kalatungan, the mist carries the stories of generations. This is the ancestral home of the Talaandig people, one of the many Indigenous communities who live in the embrace of these rugged peaks.

This , we are deeply grateful to Datu Dexter Besto for trusting us to share the story and sacred practices of the Talaandig. For generations, his people have given their whole hearts to protecting their ancestral land through their traditional knowledge.

“The wellbeing of people is inseparable from the wellbeing of nature," Datu Dexter says proudly. For the Talaandig, this isn't just an idea, it is a way of life. Their strong community is bound by a shared responsibility to care for the forests, rivers, wildlife, and mountains that have nurtured them for centuries.

To them, these mountain ranges are far more than just a source of food or livelihood. They are sacred, living landscapes that hold their culture, their spirituality, and their very identity.

Every major action in the community begins with respect. “Traditional rituals are an essential part of Talaandig life,” Datu Dexter explains. “Before any significant activity within our ancestral community, we perform rituals to seek guidance, express gratitude, and honor our ancestors, the Creator, and the natural world. And we are very proud of this practice.”

These rituals are a living promise. They reflect a deep belief that Nature is not a resource to be used up, but a living being worthy of respect.

This deep connection comes to life during Anlaw ta Kalatungan, a cultural festival that honors both their Indigenous heritage and the environmental importance of the Mt. Kalatungan Range. It is a beautiful celebration that strengthens their commitment to protecting their lands and passing their traditions down to the youth.

The worldview of the Talaandig perfectly mirrors the principles of the Rights of Nature, the simple truth that Nature has an inherent right to exist, thrive, renew itself, and be protected. By taking care of Mt. Kalatungan, the Talaandig community shows the world a vital lesson: when we protect our forests and ecosystems, we are also protecting Indigenous cultures, ancestral wisdom, and the future of all living things.

🔴 HAPPENING NOW: PMPI and Organization Members of the Rights of Nature Philippines are holding a press conference exposing corporate-driven ecological destruction and the harassment of environmental defenders across the Philippines.

Throughout the country, communities are bearing the brunt of corporate greed and legal intimidation. We are calling for urgent support and the recognition of the Rights of Nature.

Ecological justice is a collective duty, and protecting our common home begins with the refusal to look away.

Don't look away. Stand with our defenders. 🌏👇
