Join us as we co-host Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT)'s 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 tomorrow!

Over the past two weeks, the GLP cohort has been engaging with leaders, experts, institutions, and communities across the Philippines to explore the challenges and opportunities surrounding green energy and water solutions.

At the forum, participants will present their strategic recommendations on 𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙀𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙮 & 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨, developed through their engagements, discussions and research throughout the programme.

The presentations will be followed by a discussion on what it will take to drive sustainable and inclusive progress.

𝐃𝐄𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬: 𝐃𝐄𝐀 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐃𝐌𝐎 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐁𝐮𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐨𝐧

A total of twelve (12) solar street lights were formally turned over to Purok 13 and Purok 20 in Valencia City, Bukidnon on June 14–15, 2026. This initiative was undertaken by the Davao Episcopal Area (DEA) Disaster Management Office (DMO), with support from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), as part of its continuing commitment to assist communities affected by disasters.

According to Rev. Marian Joy Talino, DEA-DRRM Volunteer in Bukidnon, Purok 13 and Purok 20 were identified as among the communities most severely affected by the flash floods that struck the area in September 2025. This assessment was based on data gathered in coordination with the local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) office.

The turnover of the solar street lights forms part of the DEA-DMO’s long-term recovery and rehabilitation efforts. Earlier, on April 8, 2026, the office distributed food packs, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) supplies, and shelter assistance in the form of cookware and utensils to 200 affected families. During consultations with residents, the need for solar-powered street lighting emerged as a priority concern due to the lack of adequate lighting along community roads.

In his message during the blessing service, Bishop Israel M. Painit emphasized the deeper significance of the project:

“𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘬𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘯 𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘺𝘢 𝘢𝘵 𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘺𝘰𝘴. 𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘸 𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘺𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘶𝘬𝘶𝘩𝘢 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘢 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴, 𝘬𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘨-𝘢𝘴𝘢, 𝘬𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘯, 𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘬𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘰𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘥.”

The blessing and turnover ceremony was led by Bishop Israel M. Painit, together with the DEA-DMO staff under the leadership of Daniel Ela. Also present were the leaders of Purok 13 and Purok 20, Engr. Riedo A. Panaligan-President of the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST), Christopher Erezo-Technical Staff of CREST, Rev. Marian Joy Talino, Pastor Janette Saceda, members of the United Methodist Church, and residents of the beneficiary communities.

We are proud to share our publication titled 𝐄𝐧𝐝-𝐨𝐟-𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞. This publication was our collaboration with the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies and in partnership with the FES Philippines.

As the Philippines accelerates its turn to renewable energy and, in particular, solar power, there is a growing need to establish an efficient, sustainable and inclusive approach to the end-of-life (EOL) solar panel management. This study examines the socio-economic benefits of shifting from a disposal-oriented waste management paradigm toward a circular economy framework that prioritizes repair, reuse, and recycling and high-value material recovery.

CREST, together with experts from the building and construction sector, joined the pilot 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 held last week. Our gratitude to International Labour Organization and Korea Polytechnic University for the wonderful event.
