More than just a school, Sorsogon High Schoolโnow known as Sorsogon National High School (SNHS)โstands as a testament to over a century of educational excellence and community pride.
๐๏ธ Humble Beginnings (1903โ1920s)
SNHS opened its doors on June 24, 1903, with 84 students and 2 American teachers, under the leadership of Principal Stephen W. Ford.
Classes were first held in a two-story semi-concrete building, funded through civic donations and built with the help of then-Governor Bernardino Monreal.
As part of the Thomasite movement, instruction began in English. By 1908, Filipino teachers trained by the Americans joined the faculty. The first official graduation was held in 1921, producing only five graduatesโproof of how education was a hard-won privilege at the time.
๐ Growth & Pride (1930sโ1941)
By the 1930s, Sorsogon High School had earned a reputation for academic, athletic, and cultural excellence. With a growing student body, double sessions were introduced by the early 1940s.
Tragedy struck on November 15, 1941, when the main school building and its dormitory were razed by fireโweeks before the Japanese invasion during World War II.
๐ฅ War, Fire, and Resilience
During the Japanese occupation, the schoolโs ruins were used as a military garrison. Many still recall stories of wartime atrocitiesโand the legends and ghosts that would come to surround the burned building.
Post-war, classes resumed in makeshift huts and temporary shelters, continuing until permanent structures were rebuilt in the 1950s.
In February 2014, the historic main building once again caught fire and was destroyed. But thanks to heritage conservation efforts, it was faithfully restored and reopened on June 5, 2016, with its classic architecture preserved.
๐ Becoming โNationalโ & Expanding Horizons
The school evolved into Sorsogon Provincial High School in the 1950s and was renamed Sorsogon National High School (SNHS) in 1965, marking its rise as a national institution.
The introduction of vocational tracks, the launch of The Luzon Tip school paper, and evening classes (first held in 1969) allowed more students from different walks of life to access education. The first evening graduation was held in 1973.
With the help of international collaborations like Peace Corps volunteers and Asian Development Bank grants, the school became a regional leader in Science and Mathematics education during the late 1970s and โ80s.
๐ Modern Era โ Structure & Leadership
SNHS today has 9 academic departments and support offices that include Guidance, Health, Library, and Admin units.
Enrollment grew from 84 students in 1903 to over 5,300 by 2014โa staggering testament to its influence and demand.
The restored main building stands as both an academic hub and heritage landmark, continuing the schoolโs legacy of strong leadership.
โค๏ธ A Legacy That Lives On
From nipa huts to digital classrooms, Sorsogon High School has grown with the timesโbut has never lost its core values: education, resilience, and public service.
As we celebrate over 122 years of excellence, we honor every teacher, student, and community leader whose journey began at SNHS.
๐ท Share your memories! Whether itโs your class photo, section name, or an unforgettable classroom storyโletโs celebrate the school that shaped generations.๐
