The Ateneo Environmental Science Society is a community of environment-minded individuals grounded on logical environmentalism.

It is the premier environmental student organization of Ateneo and the home organization of BS Environmental Science majors. The AESS envisions itself as a community of proactive Ateneans guided by logical environmentalism who will lead the Filipino nation, starting with the LS community, towards its direct involvement in environmental protection and conservation efforts towards the nationwide development of a sustainable environment and lifestyle. The organization commits itself to initiating campaigns that are grounded on logical environmentalism enriched by the varying disciplines of its members. The AESS aids Ateneans, especially Environmental Science Majors, in recognizing man’s proactive role within the environment as stewards of God’s creation by facilitating avenues of involvement within and beyond the University.

𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐃𝐀𝐘, 𝟑𝟗 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐀𝐆𝐎 – 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐀𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐓𝐎𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐄𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓.

During the 80s, scientists confirmed that the ozone layer was depleting due to the use of Chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. These substances are commonly used as refrigerants and found in air conditioning and refrigerators. They harm the ozone layer due to their chemical composition that disrupts the formation of ozone. This culminated when the discovery of a gargantuan hole in the Ozone Layer above Antarctica.

To address this, countries gathered for the Vienna Convention on the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 1985 to establish cooperative mechanisms between nations to address the crisis that was being faced at the time. Eventually, these talks led to the signing and adoption of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer by the United Nations on September 16, 1987.

Nations around the world quickly ratified this protocol, in a rare display of unity and solidarity for the environment. To this day, it remains one of the first and few treaties of the UN that enjoys Universal Ratification.

The effects weren’t immediately felt, but 39 years later, multiple studies have shown that the Ozone Layer has not only stopped depleting, but it is healing. What was once thought to be irreversible damage to our atmosphere has now become reversible.

This is what happens when we, as a people, stand up to fight for our lived environment.

The Montreal Protocol is a testament to the results that we can achieve if we work together, not as individuals, but as a people standing up for our environment. This is especially important now amidst the growing threat of the Climate Crisis, where international cooperation is paramount if we wish to find a solution to stop the rise in global temperatures that will lead to catastrophic environmental impacts.

It also shows that there will be conferences and agreements, but it will not work if we do not take action to enforce them. The Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals, and the annual United Nations Climate Change Conferences are in force and have been at the forefront of our environmental action and discourse, yet it remains ineffective because of the lack of international cooperation.

There is no longer time for us to wait for action; the time to act is now or never. The Ateneo Environmental Science Society (AESS) calls for international solidarity, action, and cooperation in the global response against the Climate Crisis. Let us also extend this cooperation by providing aid and consideration to developing countries whose economies cannot sustain the transition, but are carrying most of the burden in transitioning away from non-renewable sources of energy and integrating sustainable practices. Moreover, we must start at the top and hold the corporations that continue to plunder our environment in the name of profit. For as long as there is profit involved, environmental destruction is inevitable.

Today, 39 years later, 𝐀𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝.

In a recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (2026), entitled Limiting Overshoot: Navigating exceedance of 1.5°C and pathways towards return, it was forecast that global temperatures will inevitably rise above the 1.5°C benchmark. This is the very same benchmark that environmental activists and organizations have fought to maintain, as crossing the threshold would cause irreversible environmental damage. Yet, here we are today, at the crossroads of environmental annihilation or mitigation of the damage that a significant increase in global temperatures would cause.

These effects have never been felt as acutely in human history as they are today. As each year passes, people are awoken to the news of record temperatures, devastating floods brought about by the glacial collapse in Nepal, the heat waves claiming thousands of lives within the European continent, and the unprecedented thunderstorms that have rocked North America—all being indicators of the disastrous effects of climate change as we approach the 1.5ºC threshold.

This is especially true in the Philippines, where yearly monsoonal rains have wreaked havoc—sometimes overpowering typhoons. Yet, despite such disastrous implications brought about by the climate crisis, governments and institutions continue to sideline this pressing issue while actively contributing to further environmental destruction, to an extent that could be considered an 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞.

𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

Recent government-mandated suspensions during extreme weather events have since reflected the oligarchic and autocratic bureaucracies that ultimately cause the working class to suffer the red-tape of unqualified and unprepared disaster risk preparedness measures. Suspensions have recently been normalized to mean shifts to alternative modalities, perpetuating the idea of education as a privilege only accessible to students who have the technology to adapt. Science literacy is at stake as parents and students rely on social media for formal government announcements, while said institutions pocket the budget allocations meant to address the faults of our climate inaction. The blanket shift to alternative modalities is an illusion of continuity that ignores the severe socio-economic and digital divides in our country.

The Ateneo Environmental Science Society (AESS) reiterates its call for a multimodal, nuanced, and multisectoral approach to the issue. We cannot simply continue to suspend and rely on students to provide resources for alternative modes of delivery during a time of crisis, nor can we expect the education system to absorb the responsibilities that come along with the government’s inaction.

Addressing this issue begins with confronting the underlying systemic failures and root causes behind these disasters, which are the primary reasons for suspensions in the first place. Moreover, contingency plans must be put in place for these events, for we cannot simply rely on last-minute forecasts to guide our class modalities, nor can we only begin to adjust school calendars after the suspensions have already been handed out. 𝐀 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞.

𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

As prescribed by Section 16, Article II of the 1987 Constitution, the people of the Philippines are entitled to a 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. In the current state of the Philippine environment, this constitutional right has been 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 by the amount of irresponsible development across the country that displaces Indigenous Peoples, wrecks natural ecosystems, and destroys our environmental and cultural heritage along the way.

While the development of our industries and country is vital to our economy and people, it must be done responsibly and with the best interests of the people—and all the people that will be affected by it. 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭; 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝.

With such issues at hand, there can no longer be time to wait for further environmental action. We must take action now towards a sustainable, green, and environmentally conscious society that will do its part to mitigate the effects of the Climate Crisis and usher in a new age of sustainability.

Once again, AESS stands with the Filipino people in their fight towards a healthful and balanced ecology.

Just days ago, we were under scorching heat, the streets radiating an unbearable kind of warmth. Now, heavy rain pours, and strong winds sweep through our communities.

Last August 28, 2026, classes were suspended alongside the final day of COA-M RecWeek: Crossroads 2026 due to strong and inclement weather conditions, with rainfall expected to reach 70–100 mm due to the intensified Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). In the span of just days, the weather we had grown accustomed to shifted suddenly. Earlier in the month, Quezon City had already received 511.6 mm during August 1–9, “nearly 90%” of the average monthly rainfall of 568.6 mm for August.

We are often told to simply BE RESILIENT, but resilience can no longer be the only answer when such weather leaves communities vulnerable. Erratic and extreme weather should not become frequent enough to disrupt our classrooms and communities, our livelihoods, and the future we hope to build. A sustainable future requires logical environmentalism: choosing and pursuing actions grounded in reasoning, empirical data, and meaningful action.

Each action starts with us. It is in the choices we make and the issues we choose to speak up about, because meaningful action is not simply what we acknowledge individually, but what we build and demand together.

Though we cannot control the rain, we can decide what kind of future it lands on.
