Back in September 2015, world leaders came together and agreed on what's still the world's best plan for a better future: 17 Goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Similarly, SDSN Youth Philippines has proudly been around for 11 years and counting! Growing alongside this agenda and working to bring it to life through youth-led action.

11 years in, we've seen progress, setbacks, and a lot of hard work from changemakers, communities, and young people around the world pushing this agenda forward. With just 4 years left to 2030, the mission is far from over and neither is our commitment to it.

Concept Note:

Many people have misconceptions about the term "feminism," which means equal rights among all genders. In this comic, my idea was to travel back in time and showcase the contributions of women during the various periods in Philippine history. From pre-colonial Filipino women who were considered to be of great value due to their position as Babaylan and leaders to the societal changes that happened due to Spanish colonization. This will depict how historical perspective influences gender relationships today.

Concept Note:

The inspiration for this design stems from SDG 15: Life on Land, which emphasizes the crucial role of healthy ecosystems in sustaining both nature and human communities. I employed a soft, watercolor-inspired landscape style, incorporating elements like forests, fields, wildlife, birds, and the leaf cat, to create a serene visual representation of nature. The leaf cat introduces a simple and friendly touch, making the environmental message more accessible. Additionally, the four-panel comic presents the message in a clear and concise visual sequence.

The primary target audience for this design is students and young individuals. The straightforward illustrations, concise statements, and nature-inspired color palette are carefully crafted to ensure that the topic is easily comprehensible without overwhelming the audience with excessive information.

This design serves as a powerful tool for promoting disaster preparedness by highlighting the significance of safeguarding and maintaining healthy natural environments. Forests and vegetation play a vital role in mitigating the impact of hazards such as flooding, soil erosion, and landslides. Furthermore, preserving biodiversity contributes to the maintenance of balanced ecosystems. The comic encourages proactive actions like protecting forests, preventing pollution, and maintaining clean and green land. Through these visuals, the design effectively demonstrates that environmental protection is not only a form of preparedness but also a means of enhancing community resilience to natural hazards. Ultimately, the message conveyed is that safeguarding our land today lays the foundation for a safer and healthier environment for future generations.

Concept Note:

My outputs are connected not just because they mirror SDG #4, which is quality education, but also because they show the diversity of how children around the world, around the country, experience education.

I believe that education should be a right. I used to see a lot of kids when I was also a kid who worked just to keep on studying. I witnessed how some stopped and some slept in class because of tiredness. I also experienced how materials and facilities were lacking. Children deserve a better quality of education; they should be provided with support.

But with my poster and comics, I like to highlight the word "munti-munti" because despite being at such young ages, children still wanted to make sense of the "munti (small thing)" that they have.I want to encourage organizations and even children around the world to keep pursuing a better education, a better future, and a better life.

My submission is inspired by the Filipino spirit of bayanihan and our responsibility to protect forests, wildlife, and natural habitats, represented by Sibol, a superhero symbolizing growth and hope. The design targets Filipino children, students, families, and communities through a colorful and relatable character that encourages simple environmental actions. It promotes disaster preparedness by showing that protecting nature, planting trees, reducing waste, and caring for ecosystems can help build safer, stronger, and more resilient communities.

Concept Note:

So this concept of mine was inspired back when I was in my sophomore year in college. We had a final bottle project in our PE 1 (visit this link for your reference: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OSqFSnn_uyYyKTCzD8QcxWCt-xj6mM6_/view?usp=sharing ) wherein we were grouped into 4 members and collected all of our trashes (mostly wrappers to fit) and stuffed it into a plastic bottle until it became fully hardened. After we filled our bottles full of trash, we met as a group and then bundled the bottles together to form the legs of a table. This activity astonished me because of how simple tasks like this contribute to reducing waste and create a functional item for the community. To me, it is one of the best sustainable practices by Filipinos against pollution.

With pollution serving as one of the issues in the Philippines, just like in the Pasig River, where it has approximately emitted 63,000 metric tons of plastic waste into the ocean every year. This issue also urged me to choose SDG 12 as my topic for this competition, and this matters for advocating sustainable consumption and recycling to minimize resource waste. For wider dissemination and advocacy, my target audience will mainly be youth, and the visual materials were illustrated according to their demographic to serve as an inspiration for them to copy these fun and interesting actions against pollution and climate change.

These visual materials show recycling waste as SDG 12 because it encourages responsible consumption by converting used materials or waste, such as plastic bottles, wrappers, and metal cans, into functional items that can be used in everyday life instead of just throwing them away. These simple plastic bottles can be turned into functional items such as a table, chair, plant pots, house decorations, and even a toy.

Concept Note:

“Edukasyon ang pundasyon ng ating kinabukasan, ngunit ang sino mang humahadlang dito ay mangahas na ipinagkakait ang ating inaasam-asam.”

It is actually inspired by the crisis we are facing in education today. As you may have already known and observed, the state of education is slowly declining.

These artworks are intended to inform, spread knowledge, and open our eyes to the reality we are facing today. Sustainable Development Goal #4 aims to attain quality education in the world we live in. However, with a society that is not ready to move forward, this will not be possible.

Through my art, I aim to inspire my fellow students, respected teachers, and communities to be determined, eager, and vocal enough to achieve quality education despite the boldly presented societal issues and failures of those in higher positions.

We may be intelligent enough to seek quality education, but we must also know that we deserve better.

Concept Note:

As a Gen-Z student, I made this comic because I see this exact scenario play out in my own feed every single day: someone gets shook over a climate post, hits repost, and treats that like it's their contribution done. My inspiration came from wanting to call out my own generation's habit of confusing online awareness with real-world action — because when it comes to disasters like floods and typhoons, a repost doesn't stop rising floodwaters or clear a clogged drainage system.

I used the "Save Our Earth" post showing pollution, flood, and El Niño specifically because these are real disaster risks tied to climate change that our communities face constantly. The turning point — where the phone itself calls the boy out ("Eme ka boss! Repost lang yan, gumalaw ka naman") — represents that moment of realization we all need: that being informed is only step one.

My target audience is fellow students and young people, since we're the generation most active on social media and most exposed to climate content, but also the generation with the most potential to actually act if we choose to.

The design promotes disaster preparedness by showing that small, consistent actions — like cleaning streets and properly managing waste — directly reduce flood risk and other climate-related disasters in our own communities. It's not about grand gestures; it's about the everyday habits that prevent bigger problems down the line. The closing line, "Awareness starts online, change happens offline," is my direct message to my peers: use social media to learn and spread awareness, sure, but don't let that be the finish line. Real preparedness means showing up, cleaning up, and acting before disaster strikes — not after we've already scrolled past it.

Presenting Entry 19:

Concept Note:

The comic strip shows a young woman from a family that struggles to afford education beyond elementary school. Despite being surrounded by people who have lost hope, she remains determined to continue her studies. With the help of educational assistance and scholarships, she is able to pursue her education and work toward her dreams.

Me and my collaborator named Angel Berico’s inspiration for this work is the reality that many Filipino children want to finish their education and earn a degree, but financial struggles and unequal access to opportunities can make their dreams difficult to reach. No matter how hardworking or resilient they are, some students still need support to overcome these challenges.

Our poster also highlights some of the best practices being conducted in the Philippines to support and promote SDG 4: Quality Education, such as scholarship programs, educational assistance, and initiatives that help make learning more accessible to students, especially those from underserved communities.

This comic is intended for Filipino students who may feel hopeless because of their circumstances. My idea and Angel’s artwork want them to remember that their situation does not have to define their future and that there are people and organizations willing to support their dreams.

We also want this message to reach educators, NGOs, and the youth. By working together, we can continue supporting programs that provide quality and accessible education for every Filipino child. Every student has a dream worth pursuing, and through education and collective support, we can help make those dreams possible.
