The week-long training programme will deepen participants' theological understanding of human dignity and its relation to the promotion and protection of human rights, strengthen their understanding of contemporary human rights issues in Asia, and provide practical knowledge of international human rights principles, mechanisms, and advocacy processes.

Young Christian leaders between the ages of 25 and 35 from across Asia who are committed to human rights, justice, and advocacy are eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in bringing the learning from the training into their churches, organisations, or communities.

All applications must be endorsed by a CCA member church, member council, or partner ecumenical organisation.

Twenty-five participants will be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to human rights advocacy and their engagement in the ministry of their respective church or organisation. The selection process will seek to ensure gender and confessional balance, as well as fair national and sub-regional representation across Asia.

Bilang mga kabataang Kristiyano na tinawag upang maging saksi ni Kristo sa kasaysayan, mariing tinututulan ng Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) ang patuloy na panghihimasok ng mga dayuhang kapangyarihan sa ating bayan. Ang Estados Unidos ay hindi kailanman naging tunay na kaibigan ng sambayanang Pilipino sa ngalan ng "demokrasya," "kaunlaran," at "seguridad," bagkus ay ipinagpapatuloy nito ang pagsasamantala sa ating likas na yaman, murang lakas-paggawa, at pambansang soberanya. Sa mga ito, nakikitang naiiba ang interes ng ating bansa at sa kanilang bersyon ng pagpapaunlad, ito ay ang mas pagpapalawak pa ng kasunduang militar at ang maluwag na pagpapasok ng mga dayuhang pasilidad sa ating bansa. Na sa gitna ng sakuna, sa gitna ng dinaranas ng ating bansa, nakikitang nasa kanluran ang sentro ng bansang pilipinas.

Dumaan ang mga nakaraang buwan at nasasaksihan natin ang panibagong mukha ng imperyo sa ilalim ng tinatawag na Pax Silica—isang kaayusang inuuna ang kontrol sa teknolohiya, artificial intelligence, semiconductor industries, at mga kritikal na mineral na kinakailangan ng mga ito. Sa likod ng pangakong “”trabaho,” inobasyon,” at "pag-unlad" ay ang lumalalang pagkamkam sa lupa, tubig, at iba pang likas na yaman na siyang pinagmumulan ng buhay ng ating mga magsasaka, mangingisda, at mga katutubong pamayanan. Ang mga palayan ay ginagawang mga mall at tinatayuan ng mga imprastraktura, ang mga dagat ay pilit na pinapatag at tinatayuan ng mga highway. Ang mga pilipino ay pilit na tinatapak tapakan, mula sa pagtaas ng presyo ng langis, hanggang sa presyo ng bigas. Bigas na mas mabigat pa ang presyo kaysa nilalaman nito sa tyan ng mga Pilipino.

Fifty-four years have passed since Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., placed the Philippines under martial law through Proclamation No. 1081. From 1972 to 1986, civil liberties were suppressed, the media was censored, the government mismanaged national finances through excessive borrowing and spending, and human rights were violated nationwide. Protesters were arrested collectively during the night of the declaration, while activists were persecuted, and even murdered, across 14 years of martial law. Marcos Sr., and his allies, greenlit large-scale development projects that threatened rural communities.

Through the united resolve of the people to refuse and resist, the Marcoses were ousted from Malacañang in 1986.

Fifty-four years have passed, yet the story remains the same.

Amid the rampant corruption within the Philippine government, only a handful of those accused of stealing funds meant for government projects and basic services have been convicted. In a Senate split cleanly in the middle, some senators choose to avoid the responsibility of being held accountable. This, in the middle of an impeachment process where the senators themselves have to pass judgment on the Vice President, currently on trial for misuse of government funds among other charges.

In all of these developments, Bongbong Marcos’ stance is lame. He calls for due process on matters that need to be tried in courts of law and advocates for impartiality in matters that need executive will. But these developments may only be a scapegoat for him and his family to continue to avoid accountability themselves—a scapegoat that a family of serial plunderers are familiar with. After all, he is the mastermind behind all corruption issues under his watch.

The State continues to suppress the right to protest and resist through arbitrary arrest, political harassment and red-tagging. Student protesters and their paralegals were recently arrested en masse in a Metro Manila protest-action against the US-led Pax Silica initiative—an initiative seeking to progress economies in the Information Age at the expense of the developing world’s resources and socioeconomic capacity. Defenders of land rights against destructive open-pit mining in Nueva Vizcaya, parts of the Cordillera Region and Mindoro, among other areas, are being subjected to falsified charges by state agents.

Fifty-four years have passed, but the scars that keep hurting keep us from forgetting.

In light of rampant government corruption, in light of the state’s suppression of resistance and repression of rights defenders, and in light of the advancement of catastrophic initiatives such as Pax Silica, we must remain steadfast in asserting the rights of the Filipino. It is through a united resolve that we fought back against Martial Law in 1986. And it is through the same united resolve that we must refuse and resist state-sponsored oppression in our society.

A Pastoral Appeal on the Arrest of Environmental Defenders in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya

“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡ℎ 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝐺𝑜𝑑.” -𝑃𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑚 24:1

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) Council of Bishops has received with deep concern reports that environmental defenders Lei Jin Dugay, Donny Dugay, and June Fiataccag, members of the Kasibu Inter-Tribal Response for Ecological Development (KIRED), were reportedly arrested by PNP personnel on August 19, 2026 at a community barricade in Barangay Paquet, Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, while opposing the operations of the North Luzon Mineral Resources Corporation (NLMRC).

The arrests reportedly occurred while residents were questioning the entry of seven barrels of crude oil intended for a road project involving an NLMRC backhoe. Further concern was raised by reports that their legal counsel was prevented from communicating with them, raising serious questions regarding their access to legal assistance and due process.

The three environmental defenders have since been released on bail. However, their release does not erase the circumstances surrounding their arrest nor the broader concerns regarding the continuing harassment, intimidation, and legal actions reportedly directed against environmental defenders in Nueva Vizcaya and Isabela, including nearly 20 reported Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) cases.

CEC-Philippines, ANVIK, and Kalikasan PNE have condemned the arrests and called for the protection of the three KIRED members and an end to attacks against environmental defenders.

𝗔 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲

As the UCCP Council of Bishops, we unequivocally join this call for justice and condemn the continuing harassment and intimidation of environmental defenders. We affirm the right of every person to due process, legal counsel, and protection from unjust and retaliatory actions.

Our faith calls us “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Humanity is entrusted by God to “till it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Thus, protecting creation and defending the dignity and rights of vulnerable communities are integral to our Christian calling.

As Amos declares, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24). Environmental defenders who protect land, water, communities, and creation deserve respect and protection not intimidation, harassment, or repression.

We are deeply concerned that government policies and actions may prioritize mining and corporate interests over community rights and ecological protection. Development must never sacrifice human dignity, Indigenous peoples’ rights, environmental integrity, or the welfare of future generations.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹

We call upon government authorities to:

• Ensure that the charges against the three environmental defenders are reviewed fairly and, where found baseless or retaliatory, immediately dismissed;
• Uphold their rights to due process, legal counsel, and protection from further harassment or intimidation;
• End harassment, intimidation, and retaliatory legal actions against environmental and community defenders;
• Respect Indigenous peoples and local communities whose lands, livelihoods, and environment are affected by development and mining projects;
• Ensure transparency, accountability, and meaningful participation in decisions concerning natural resources; and
• Pursue a vision of development that upholds human dignity, protects communities, respects Indigenous peoples’ rights, and safeguards God’s creation.

As a Church, we seek neither confrontation nor division, but justice that restores, truth that liberates, and peace that reconciles. We stand with communities who suffer and speak when silence would allow injustice to flourish.

We give thanks that the three KIRED members have been released on bail. We nevertheless call for vigilance and continued protection of their rights, as well as an end to the broader pattern of harassment and intimidation against environmental defenders.

May God grant wisdom to our leaders, courage to those who defend life and creation, protection to the vulnerable, and compassion to all who suffer.

May God guide us in the work of justice, preserve God’s creation, and lead our nation toward peace, reconciliation, and the common good.

𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The National Executive Committee of the CYF engaged in a highly effective onboarding and strategic planning session during the third day of the turnover. Guided by Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Consultant Patrick Joshua Santos and a representative from the Management Advancement System Association Inc. (MASAI), the leaders were thoroughly oriented on the 6 newly approved UCCP Program Thrusts. This comprehensive discussion contextualized the youth's role within the church's 50-year strategic plan, highlighting current initiatives and emphasizing the vital importance of aligning CYF programs seamlessly with the broader ministries of the national church.

Equipped with this knowledge, the CYF NEC immediately transitioned into a hands-on workshop to plan and prioritize their concrete steps for this current Ecclesiastical Year (EY)—the foundational first year of their term. After strategizing, the leaders presented their workshop outputs to the larger group. These plans were collectively discussed and constructively scrutinized under Patrick's facilitation, ensuring that every program reflects our UCCP Identity as a truly "united and uniting church."

To further strengthen institutional synergy, Organizational Ministry Coordinator Ms. Jelyn Teves also joined the session. She provided essential insights on the necessity of close coordination between her department and Church-Related Organizations (CROs), reminding the NEC that the CYF's success is deeply intertwined with the active, organized life of the wider church community.

𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗬𝗔𝗖 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

On the second day of the Turn-over last July 31, 2026, the incoming and outgoing NEC dedicated time for constructive reflection through the NYAC Assessment. Facilitated by the outgoing National CYF President, Ms. Jezreel Vallente-Capul, the session provided a comprehensive review of the evaluation results from the recent National Youth Assembly and Camp (NYAC). Every comment, suggestion, and recommendation from the participants was meticulously documented and presented, ensuring that the voice of the youth was actively heard and valued.

The thorough assessment covered all vital aspects of the assembly, from committee functions and program ex*****on to scheduling and accommodations. By openly discussing both our established strengths and the areas needing enhancement, the leadership demonstrated a strong commitment to growth. This transparent and constructive dialogue is a true manifestation of the progressive and open-minded spirit that is deeply rooted in our UCCP Identity.

While the experiences and valuable insights were duly noted to improve future gatherings, this assessment was also a moment of deep gratitude. We extend our sincerest thanks to everyone who supported the NYAC—the individuals and communities who generously shared their financial blessings, dedicated their time, and offered their prayers. A special and heartfelt note of gratitude goes to UCCP Allen and the entire Eastern Visayas Jurisdiction (EVJ) for their warm hospitality and for graciously hosting the assembly. We also extend our deepest appreciation to the United Evangelical Mission (UEM), our invaluable partner during the National Youth Camp, who provided us with so much more than just financial support!
