🌱♻️ 𝙀𝙘𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙖: 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙒𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚 𝙂𝙤?

Did you know that, if you live in Quezon City, every piece of trash from your home follows a specific journey, and it all begins with you?

Under RA 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, households are required to sort their waste into three categories: biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable. This simple step isn’t just a rule, it is the foundation of an entire waste management system designed to protect public health and reduce environmental harm.

Once segregated, waste collection from homes is brought to Barangay Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), where it is sorted further. Here’s what happens next:

✪ Biodegradable waste can be turned into compost, returning nutrients back to the soil
✪ Recyclables are stored, sold, and processed into new materials
✪ Residual waste is transported through transfer stations before finally ending up in sanitary landfills

Beyond this formal system, an informal network of waste pickers and junkshops plays a crucial role in recovering recyclables. For many communities, this system not only reduces waste but also supports livelihoods, turning discarded materials into sources of income.

Overall, this entire flow presents a bigger goal, to minimize waste even before it reaches landfills. RA 9003 emphasizes reducing, reducing and recovering materials as much as possible, ensuring that disposal is always the last step, and not the first. This is a reminder that your trash does not just disappear — it moves, transforms, and impacts communities along the way.

🌱♻️ 𝙀𝙘𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙖: 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙋𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙉𝙖𝙫𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙨

Did you know that the two-week fire in the Navotas City Sanitary Landfill this month is not the first time a landfill in the Philippines has ended in a tragedy?

On the 10th of April, a fire broke out in the abandoned landfill of Navotas City and is yet to be extinguished as of this writing. It made the air that blankets a large portion of Metro Manila unhealthy for the past two weeks. But this is not the first time a trash mountain has put its neighbors’ lives at stake.

A dumpsite in Payatas, Quezon City, also ended up in a tragedy when typhoon rains triggered a garbage avalanche on the 10th of July, 2000. This 50-foot trash slide buried around 300 homes, claimed the lives of 232 residents, and left 655 families of the nearby Lupang Pangako homeless.

As one of the worst disasters in Philippine history, it prompted the closure of the said dumpsite and the subsequent passage of the Republic Act No. 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. More than two decades later, our country has yet to recognize that the landfill approach to solid waste management is unsustainable, and the need to “turn off the tap” at its source is already urgent.
