𝘼𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙆𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣 2026 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙎𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨!

Sharing some pictures of our AK Volunteer teams with UPD community last April 26, 2026! We were able to gather around thirty kids from Pook Marilag, Krus Na Ligas - Community Learning Hub, and Pook Aguinaldo in Baluyot Basketball Court, where children (and even some parents!) learned more about the importance of caring for Mother Nature. 🌱

We talked about micro plastics and their impact on climate change. Then we concluded our educational discussions with a painting activity about waste segregation, where the kids had so much fun and shared important insights. We also provided silicone lunchboxes and donated some school supplies for the kids. ♻️

This would not have been possible if not for our wonderful participation with UP JPIA and WeGeneration Initiative. UP JPIA Abakada generously provided the school supplies and learning kits we were able to provide to the children of different communities. WeGeneration Initiative Ph spearheaded the lecture-discussion that sparked children’s curiosity on the dangers of pollution brought by multinational companies and other man-made activities. 🌎

UP Green League will continue to foster environmental consciousness and empower communities to protect and nurture our shared home. We would like to thank everyone who has been part of this meaningful experience! 💚

🌱♻️ 𝙀𝙘𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙖: 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙒𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚 𝙂𝙤?

Did you know that, if you live in Quezon City, every piece of trash from your home follows a specific journey, and it all begins with you?

Under RA 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, households are required to sort their waste into three categories: biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable. This simple step isn’t just a rule, it is the foundation of an entire waste management system designed to protect public health and reduce environmental harm.

Once segregated, waste collection from homes is brought to Barangay Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), where it is sorted further. Here’s what happens next:

✪ Biodegradable waste can be turned into compost, returning nutrients back to the soil
✪ Recyclables are stored, sold, and processed into new materials
✪ Residual waste is transported through transfer stations before finally ending up in sanitary landfills

Beyond this formal system, an informal network of waste pickers and junkshops plays a crucial role in recovering recyclables. For many communities, this system not only reduces waste but also supports livelihoods, turning discarded materials into sources of income.

Overall, this entire flow presents a bigger goal, to minimize waste even before it reaches landfills. RA 9003 emphasizes reducing, reducing and recovering materials as much as possible, ensuring that disposal is always the last step, and not the first. This is a reminder that your trash does not just disappear — it moves, transforms, and impacts communities along the way.
