Livestock production continues to be an important livelihood and economic activity across the Calumpang River Watershed. Ensuring that these activities are carried out responsibly also requires local governments to have a clear understanding of environmental requirements, proper animal waste management, and practical approaches to pollution prevention.

Conservation International Philippines, in partnership with DENR-CENRO Lipa, brought together local government partners from Batangas City, Lipa City, San Jose, Rosario, Taysan, and Padre Garcia for a technical discussion and knowledge-sharing session on responsible hog raising, environmental compliance, and pollution control.

Resource speakers from DENR Environmental Management Bureau, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Science and Technology shared technical guidance on environmental regulations and compliance, good animal husbandry practices, pollution prevention, and appropriate technologies for waste management and sustainable livestock production.

Conservation International Philippines also directly engages livestock producers, especially hog producers, through a series of learning sessions in local communities, providing practical guidance on responsible hog raising, animal waste management, and environmental practices.

Conservation International Philippines is currently implementing the 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, which aims to promote the sustainable management and protection of the watershed through science-based planning, local government collaboration, and community engagement. The activity forms part of these efforts to support responsible livelihood practices while helping protect the waterways and communities within the watershed.

𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻, 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 🦜🌳

The Dulungan hornbill (𝑅ℎ𝑎𝑏𝑑𝑜𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑟ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑖), also known as the Rufous-headed Hornbill, is a Critically Endangered bird species found in the Central Panay Mountain Range (CPMR).

Every August, the Province of Antique celebrates Dulungan Month to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving this iconic hornbill and its forest habitat. This year’s theme – “𝘗𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘨𝘢 𝘋𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘯, 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘬𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘒𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘯, 𝘈𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘈𝘮𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘯” (The Dulungan Bird: Farmer of the Forest – Together, Let's Protect It) – highlights the species’ vital role in forest regeneration through seed dispersal, underscoring our shared responsibility to conserve biodiversity and strengthen ecosystem resilience.

Launched on August 3, Dulungan Month 2026 is supported by the TRANSCEND Project in advancing forest protection and conservation. On August 6, a Biodiversity Talk in Sebaste brought together youth, academe, and local partners, using interactive exhibits and activities to inspire community action for protecting vital habitats.

TRANSCEND is also supporting the Biodiversity Monitoring System Orientation and Actual Dulungan Count to build on-ground capacity for forest conservation and ecosystem monitoring in the CPMR. Protecting the Dulungan means safeguarding the forests it regenerates and the communities that depend on healthy ecosystems—achieved through our vital partnerships with Province of Antique, Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer-Antique, Menro Sebaste, and DENR CENRO Culasi, along with participating schools and youth.

The 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 (𝘛𝘙𝘈𝘕𝘚𝘊𝘌𝘕𝘋) is a joint initiative of the Philippines and Germany through the International Climate Initiative (IKI). Through a whole-of-society approach that fosters local partnerships and action, the project supports climate and biodiversity goals and is implemented by a consortium that includes GIZ, Conservation International Philippines Foundation Inc. (CIPFI), Rare, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲​

Spanning approximately 6,600 hectares, the Dalanas River Watershed Forest Reserve, located in the municipalities of Barbaza, Bugasong, and Laua-an in Antique, is a critical lifeline for local communities. It provides clean drinking water and irrigation, shields families from flash floods and landslides, and serves as a sanctuary for native flora and fauna in the Central Panay Mountain Range.​

To strengthen its long-term protection, the TRANSCEND Project supported the Stakeholder Consultation Workshop for the formulation of the Dalanas River Watershed Forest Reserve Protected Area Management Plan (DRWFR PAMP) last July 30, 2026.​

This activity brought together key stakeholders—including local government units (LGUs), national government agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), and Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs)—to address management challenges, highlight opportunities, and build a participatory, science-based, and locally responsive plan for the sustainable management of the protected area.​

The 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 (𝘛𝘙𝘈𝘕𝘚𝘊𝘌𝘕𝘋) is a joint initiative between the Republic of the Philippines and the Federal Republic of Germany through the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗯𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 has officially concluded its journey across the 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱, engaging 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 in a shared commitment to protect and restore the 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿.

More than a series of learning sessions, Lakbay Calumpang became a platform for environmental education, meaningful dialogue, and youth leadership. Throughout the caravan, participants strengthened their understanding of the Calumpang River Watershed, made personal pledges for environmental stewardship, and developed project ideas that they can champion in their schools and communities.

This milestone would not have been possible without the invaluable partnership of the 𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗥-𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗥𝗢 𝗟𝗶𝗽𝗮, together with our partner local government units, schools, educators, and youth organizations. To all our partners and to every participant, thank you for helping make Lakbay Calumpang a meaningful platform for empowering the next generation of watershed stewards.

While this concludes the Lakbay Calumpang caravan, it is only one step in our broader journey for the Calumpang River Watershed. We look forward to sustaining this momentum through future youth engagement activities, community initiatives, and collaborative efforts that will continue to empower young leaders to turn their ideas and commitments into meaningful action for the watershed.

Together, we move forward for a healthier, more resilient 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 and the communities it sustains.

Conservation International Philippines mourns the passing of Dr. Kent Carpenter, a pioneering marine scientist whose work transformed our understanding of Philippine and global marine biodiversity.

Dr. Carpenter was instrumental in bringing international attention to both the extraordinary richness and growing vulnerability of Philippine marine ecosystems. His groundbreaking research laid the scientific foundation for many of the country's most significant marine conservation efforts.

Dr. Carpenter's partnership with Conservational International in the Verde Island Passage (VIP) was very important to marine science. Among his most influential contributions was the landmark 2005 study that identified the VIP as the global center of marine shore fish biodiversity. This recognition helped pave the way for Executive Order No. 578 in 2006, which designated the Verde Island Passage Marine Corridor as a national priority for biodiversity conservation.

Building on this vision, Conservation International Philippines and its partners helped establish an interconnected network of marine protected areas that evolved into the Verde Island Passage Marine Protected Area Network (VIP MPAN), now recognized as a model of collaborative conservation spanning multiple municipalities and five provinces.

Dr. Carpenter also made valuable contributions to conservation efforts in Tubbataha Reefs through his extensive research work with the Tubbataha Management Office, helping lay the groundwork for innovative approaches such as piloting nature credits.

Dr. Carpenter's impact extended beyond the Philippines. As Director and Coordinator of the Global Marine Species Assessment (GMSA), a landmark partnership between the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Conservation International launched in 2005, he led the first comprehensive global assessment of extinction risk for approximately 20,000 marine species. This pioneering effort significantly strengthened the scientific foundation of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and helped elevate marine conservation priorities worldwide.

His legacy lives on in the protected seascapes, strengthened conservation initiatives, and generations of scientists, conservationists, and communities inspired by his work.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the global marine conservation community. We stand with them in demanding justice for his death. His contributions to marine science and conservation will continue to shape and inspire our efforts for years to come.
