Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said warmer seas block the natural upwelling of nutrient-rich water from the ocean floor, pushing fish to migrate toward cooler waters and away from the fishing grounds small-scale fishermen depend on.

SPECIAL ON SATURDAY: Fishing communities across the Philippines face shrinking hauls and disappearing fish as El Niño-driven ocean warming suppresses the underwater food chain that sustains coastal livelihoods, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) warned.

Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said warmer seas block the natural upwelling of nutrient-rich water from the ocean floor, pushing fish to migrate toward cooler waters and away from the fishing grounds small-scale fishermen depend on.

Solidum also warned that El Niño conditions raise the likelihood of stronger typhoons—compounding the risks already faced by fishing villages along the country's typhoon-exposed eastern seaboard.
