"While making it clear that faith is NOT in opposition to technology, Pope Leo calls out the need to guide that technology towards the common good."

If we believe that human dignity for all is the greatest common good, then how shall we guide the development of technologies that may ignore or discard that dignity?

This is the question that forms the foundation of Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), the first encyclical from Pope Leo XIV. Signed on 15 May 2026 and officially released on 25 May 2026, the document is not just an “Encyclical on AI”, but an application of the sum of Catholic Social Doctrine to the challenges of today’s technological advancements.

Disaster preparedness helped reduce the number of disaster-related internally displaced people in 2025. 📉

Disaster-related displacements fell 35% to 29.9 million movements across 140 countries – a significant decline from 2024's high levels driven in part by early warning systems, evacuation protocols and community readiness. Where these measures were in place, temporary displacement functioned as a protective measure, limiting human and economic losses.

Storms caused 17.9 million internal displacements; geophysical hazards – including earthquake responses in Chile and Japan – resulted in nearly 1.6 million pre-emptive evacuations with no large-scale lasting displacement recorded.

At the end of 2025, 82.2 million people were living in internal displacement across 104 countries. More than 68.6 million were displaced by conflict and violence; with 13.6 million by disasters.

Sustained investment in monitoring, early warning and community preparedness reduces the number and duration of displacements, allowing people to return home and rebuild their lives sooner. 🏠
