In light of the influence of the recruitment process, the need for collective global initiatives to strategically ad

dress the problems in labour recruitment has never been more crucial than today. For many years, migrant workers, civil society groups, trade unions, and other allies have been aware of, and gravely concerned about the abuses endemic in the migrant labour recruitment process. Numerous initiatives and campaigns have been organized globally to uplift these concerns and to advocate for rights-based policies to combat such blatant exploitation. RecruitmentReform.org is an initiative of the civil society Open Working Group on Labour Migration and Recruitment. With members from civil society organizations across the world, the Open Working Group is committed to knowledge sharing and collective advocacy to reform migrant labour recruitment practices globally. Building upon years of civil society advocacy on labour migration, human rights, and recruitment reform, the Open Working Group was initiated in May 2014 by Migrant Forum in Asia and the Global Coalition on Migration (GCM) together with other civil society organizations. The Working Group is coordinated by Migrant Forum in Asia and forms part of the Migration and Development Civil Society Network (MADE). Have you registered yet? Join us for the GFMG Grounding Series on 30 July 2026. Building on the momentum generated by the GFMG 2.0 (pre-IMRF) series and recognizing the continued need for dedicated spaces that amplify the lived realities, experiences, and leadership of migrant workers, the Grounding Series: GFMG 3.0 will officially launch on 30 July 2026. The series will be held on the last Thursday of every month, providing a consistent platform for cross-regional dialogue, solidarity-building, and collective reflection on emerging migration issues.

The Grounding Series aims to keep grassroots voices at the center of migration governance by creating regular opportunities for migrant workers, their families, CSOs, trade unions, and allied movements to exchange updates, share strategies, and strengthen collective advocacy between major global policy processes.

The kickoff session, titled "Pulse Check: Regional Updates and Priority Areas," will bring together representatives from different regions to provide an overview of key migration developments, emerging challenges, and advocacy priorities. This session will help identify common concerns, highlight region-specific realities, and inform collective strategies for future GFMG discussions.

ILO report reveals that two-thirds of Nepalese migrant pay high recruitment fees equivalent to 3.3 months of earnings. Women faced a greater financial burden, requiring around four and a half months of earnings. Workers recruited through unregistered brokers experienced the highest recruitment costs, highlighting the risks associated with informal recruitment channels.
