𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🌏🕊️

Billions of migratory birds travel to and from their breeding sites, and the routes they take are called flyways - “highways in the sky.”

For the Philippines, one of the most important of these “highways” is the East Asian–Australasian Flyway or EAAF.

It stretches from Russia and Alaska to Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand - connecting 22 countries 🗺️

Our coasts, mudflats, mangroves, and wetlands are part of this shared route. When these habitats are lost or degraded, migratory birds across the flyway are affected.

And migratory birds are disappearing. Worldwide, more than 40% of species are in decline.

𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 🌏

We collaborated on the development of the Country Programme Strategy for the 8th phase of the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP-8). Building on more than 2 decades of empowering local communities, we facilitated consultations with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Indigenous Peoples to ensure that the next wave of funding is focused on actual challenges people face.

This unified framework—funded by the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) through the GEF-SGP and UNDP Philippines —officially launched yesterday, May 5th, with the Forest Foundation Philippines as the implementing partner.

By integrating local voices into this national strategy, we help ensure that the next phase of conservation in the Philippines remains community-led and community-driven.

The GEF Small Grants Programme-7 facilitated and provided technical assistance in the development of the Country Programme Strategy for the 8th operational phase of the SGP (SGP-8) in the Philippines. It partnered with Haribon Foundation to craft the CPS as one of the important project documents in the implementation of the SGP-8. Inputs from various stakeholders were generated to come out with the document, from which the SGP-8 Annual Work and Financial Plan shall be based. The Forest Foundation Philippines is the implementing partner of this operational phase, which shall be launched Tuesday, 05 May 2026. for the Philippine Environmentnment!

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 🌳🌊

Our partners at the Barangay Tanauan Farmers Association (BATAFA) and Alitas Farmers and Fisherfolk Association (AFFA) are leading efforts to restore a ridge-to-mangrove corridor, a key ecosystem or “lifeline” in the Southern Sierra Madre.

Meanwhile, the Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI Gumian, KALIPI Infanta) continue to develop biodiversity-friendly products that support their community’s work.

In partnership with Manulife Philippines and the Corazon S. Atayde Memorial Foundation, we continue to work alongside BATAFA, AFFA, and KALIPI members to strengthen how they manage their collective resources.

By complementing their existing financial strategies and working together to scale their projects more effectively, we’re ensuring these community-led initiatives remain as steadfast as the ecosystems they conserve.

Women continue the work for the forests of the Sierra Madre, but they need your support.

For the women of KALIPI Real Federation in Northern Quezon, the commitment to conservation is deeply personal. They still carry the memories of 2004’s Typhoon “Winnie,” which devastated their communities with floating logs and destroyed infrastructure.

Today, these women are no longer just survivors; they are leaders who are part of the change.

Nature doesn’t just need protection, 𝗶𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽

For 🌍, we continue to celebrate the women who stand on the frontlines for the Sierra Madre. Through our WePhili project, women leaders from the KALIPI Real Federation are front and center in environmental governance.

Last March 26 the Women’s Forum hosted by the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau and supported by Biofin Philippines gathered women and men to discuss how gender equity is critical to conservation.

“When diverse voices are heard and valued, the outcomes benefit both people and nature,” shared Anna Devine, co-founder of Greenseed. Greenseed’s support for our WePhili Project continues to drive women-led conservation efforts in the Southern Sierra Madre.
