👀𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀

Last August, our team traveled through the barangays of Palacian, Villa Ventura, Pinaripad Sur, and Pinaripad Norte in Aglipay, Quirino. This video provides a glimpse of how local residents share knowledge with us, and each other.

Neighbors of various ages and backgrounds guided us through their Susing Pamana–a 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮–known as the Aglipay Caves 🦇🔦

They shared observations and stories on different cultural, historical, and ecological aspects of this ancient 37-chamber cave system in their town.

These activities help to 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀' 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 (𝗞𝗕𝗔𝘀). Protecting these habitats is not just about studying biodiversity, it is also about understanding personal memories, local expertise, and histories of people who know these caves the best. In doing so, we also acknowledge and support the communal efforts by local stakeholders in protecting and conserving the site’s unique and critical biodiversity.

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) are sites of global importance for the persistence of biodiversity. Through the Updating the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in the Philippines Project, the Haribon Foundation works with the KBA Consortium, DENR, LGUs , and communities to strengthen KBA conservation and protect these vital areas as a key natural heritage for future generations. The project is supported by Forest Foundation Philippines.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 🪶

During our ASEAN Heritage Parks session last week, we highlighted the work of two BirdLife International Asia partners conserving threatened hornbills.

🇹🇭𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, Dr. Rick Leong from the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand (BCST) shared how they combine surveys of Critically Endangered Helmeted Hornbills (𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘹 𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘭) with nature-based tourism and community bird festivals to build local stewardship.

🇲🇲𝗜𝗻 𝗠𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿, Khaing Swe War from Biodiversity And Nature Conservation Association - BANCA walked us through their community-based approach for the Plain-pouched Hornbill (𝘙𝘩𝘺𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴). It focuses on youth participation, surveys, and workshops to record hornbills.

While species and languages differ from our work here in the Philippines, the process remains the same. Effective species conservation involves working with communities, setting up monitoring systems, and building a culture of conservation.

The ASEAN Heritage Parks Forum 2026 brought together policy makers and conservationists from the region to Quezon City this week. Strategies and milestones were shared, including the upcoming designation of Mount Balatukan Range Natural Park as the 15th Philippine ASEAN Heritage Park. The forum was co-organized by the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.

𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌳🐦

This was one of many lessons during our "Ecosystems Restoration and Species Conservation" session we co-organized at the ASEAN Heritage Parks Forum 2026.

The session was divided into three areas:

➡️𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Species conservation programs across the region.
➡️𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Restoration practices in different Protected Areas and ASEAN Heritage Parks.
➡️𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Platforms that share biodiversity data for better decision-making.

Chaired by Anson Tagtag of the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau and co-chaired by Haribon's Thess De la Cruz, the session allowed conservation practitioners to exchange strategies and experiences.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 strengthens our own strategies for managing protected areas and restoring ecosystems in the Philippines and across the region.

On the 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻 being downlisted from Critically Endangered to Endangered...

"While critically endangered species are at the highest risk of extinction, there are still many reasons to continue prioritising funding for those that are simply endangered.

De-prioritising projects for a species just because it’s been downlisted contradicts what the species needs."

The BirdLife International Global Partnership Meeting has begun in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪

𝟭𝟮𝟱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟮𝟬 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 are now gathering to discuss our shared targets for species, habitats, and flyways 🗺️

Yesterday we met with BirdLife International Asia partners and shared how OECMs or 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 in the Philippines help support the 30x30 target - a global target to conserve 30% of the Earth's land 🌳and water 🌊by 2030.

Earlier today marked the 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆, as well as the sharing of Birdlife Partnerships' refreshed strategy 🤝

Later this week, the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 will take place - where we will step up regional conservation efforts to conserve species and sites 🌏

Bringing local efforts from the Philippines to the BirdLife Partnership helps ensure that global and regional strategies remain rooted to community work 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 🏡
