Nananawagan si House Deputy Speaker at Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) Party-list Representative Raymond Democrito Mendoza kay Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., na sertipikahang urgent ang panukalang batas para sa ₱200 umento sa arawang sahod ng mga manggagawa sa bansa. Apela ni Mendoza kay Pangulong Marcos, huwag ng hintayin pa ang magiging desisyon ng regional wage boards bago matapos ang kasalukuyang taon.

Tinukoy ni Mendoza ang pagbaba ng pagtaya ng International Monetary Fund at Asian Development Bank sa magiging paglago ng ating ekonomiya ngayong taon. Ayon kay Mendoza, malaki ang maitutulong sa bumabagal na takbo ng ating ekonomiya kung palalakasin ang kakayahang gumastos ng bawat pamilyang Pilipino.

Diin pa ni Mendoza, sa dalawang taong natitira sa administrasyon ni PBBM ay hindi sapat na ipagdiwang ang klasipikasyon ng Pilipinas bilang upper-middle-income country kung hindi ito mararamdaman at pakikinabangan ng mga manggagawang Pilipino.

Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) spokesperson Carlos Oñate likewise questioned the PSA’s practice of counting individuals who worked for at least one hour during the reference week as employed, saying it understates the country’s jobs problem.

“The TUCP has long criticized and expressed that it is ridiculous for the PSA to claim those working for even just one hour a week as ‘employed,’ hence camouflaging and disguising the actual extent of joblessness and the true dire labor situation in the country, that there are really no new, decent, and permanent jobs out there,”Oñate told this newspaper.

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) on Sunday challenged the national government to ensure that the labor sector is getting wages commensurate to its new status as an upper-middle income country.

In a statement, TUCP said it is unacceptable for the Philippines to have lower-middle income workers even after the World Bank has classified the Philippines as an upper-middle income country.

“We cannot celebrate being an upper-middle income country while millions of Filipino workers continue to live on low wages,” said TUCP.

“It does not make any sense for our economic managers to boast of this higher national status while continuing to shortchange workers,” it furthered.

Last week, the Philippines was reclassified as an upper-middle income country by the World Bank after its per capita gross national income (GNI) exceeded the threshold for the higher income category.

In a related development, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is urging the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) to put premium on tripartism.

In a statement, Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino said it is only through tripartism can the country ensure fair wages for workers.

“In the days ahead when we review the proposed wage hikes, I hope that the NWPC would still retain, foster, and strengthen the tenet of tripartism,” he said

The 𝗜𝗟𝗢 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 (𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗖-𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, workers and trade union representatives came together to share perspectives on labour rights, workplace challenges, and the critical role of social dialogue in advancing decent work and responsible business conduct across the nickel/critical minerals supply chain.

The consultations—held in person on 9 June 2026 at the ILO Office in Makati City with representatives from the Associated Labor Unions–Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP), Federation of Free Workers (FFW), Alliance of Workers in the Informal Economy/Sector (ALLWIES), and IndustriALL, and complemented by virtual discussions with SENTRO ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa and Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) in May—highlighted the importance of meaningful worker participation in strengthening labour governance, improving access to effective grievance and remedy mechanisms, and promoting safer, more productive workplaces.

"𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞"

Sis. Lyra Jane P. Navarro, member of the Mitsumi Philippines Workers Union-ALU Board of Directors, presented a simple yet effective way to organize young STEM workers in the Philippines during the IndustriALL Joint Conference on the Future of Work for Unions in the ICT, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering and White-collar Sector in Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪.

For her, unions must lead STEM workers with their professional challenges. 👩‍💻🤝

She also recalled where unions must focus on 4Ps when navigating AI disruptions at work: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬. At the Werner-von-Siemens Centre site visit in Berlin, she also learned about opportunities and threats of technologies on jobs and workplace challenges of our sisters and brothers from Malaysia and Japan.
