After joining the IndustriALL Southeast Asia Regional Organizers' Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩, ALU-Luzon Region's Bro. Mino Balmes returns to the Philippines with a renewed sense of commitment to continue organizing, negotiate peacefully, and defend workers' rights. ✊🏽

This is after reporting the Philippine experience on different obstacles to organizing workers: unjust dismissals framed as redundancy, intimidation and surveillance of workers, and subcontractualization🛑. Some also interfere in union elections or do not recognize elections at all, or refuse to bargain. These union-busting activities hinder workers from exercising their freedom of association and collective bargaining.

Building Union Capacity to Shape AI and the Digital Transformation of Work 🤖✊🏽

ALU-Luzon Region's Bro. Kayle de Leon completed the 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘, 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 & 𝗔𝗟𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗠𝗦: 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 programme. The training strengthened his understanding of how AI and digitalization are affecting Filipino workers, particularly platform workers facing concerns on job security, fair pay, social protection, privacy, and algorithmic management.

"These activities helped me understand how we can use workers’ voice, social dialogue, and union action to address the challenges brought by AI and digitalization in the Philippines," he said.

The program was jointly conducted by the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) and the National Trades Union Congress of Singapore (NTUC). via online (Aug. 17–30) and in-person in Singapore (Sept. 7–11).

TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY

Equal work must be met with equal pay. International Equal Pay Day calls attention to the continuing need to promote fairness, equal opportunity, and the elimination of unjust wage disparities in the workplace, in which women are often at a disadvantage.

Fair and inclusive workplaces require that workers’ pay reflects their skills, responsibilities, and contributions that is free from discrimination and unequal treatment.

Let us strengthen our collective efforts to advance equal pay, decent work, and workplaces where every worker is respected, valued, and fairly compensated. ✊🏽⚖️

🌱✊🏽 Advancing Just Transition through Collective Bargaining

Sis. Melba Tampakan, Sis. Danica Bana, and Bro. Mino Balmes joined the IndustriALL Global Union Regional Workshop on Advancing Just Transition through Collective Bargaining in Jakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩, 2–3 September 2026.

Sis. Melba shared ALU’s winning Just Transition campaign, highlighting how Just Transition is being integrated into CBA negotiations, while organizing young workers to lead the campaign for climate action and decent work. ✊🏽

Participants also identified priority sectors and companies for future Just Transition CBA engagement and developed concrete national action plans. For ALU, these include translating priorities into organizing, education & advocacy 📢, collective bargaining programs; developing joint union-employer commitments 🤝🏽; and establishing Just Transition committees.

As we unite, we strengthen our collective voice and power to shape the transition toward a low-carbon and sustainable economy. ♻️🌏

"Effective training starts from young women's actual experiences," said mentee Lyra Jane Navarro. "When they see their own issues reflected, they become confident to speak, participate, and take action." 🗣️

Sis. Lyra, part of Mitsumi Philippines Workers Union-ALU Board of Directors, is one of the six ALU women leaders who joined the recent training programmes on workplace rights, wages, trade unionism, and women empowerment. 👩✊🏽👩✊🏽

Joining her are her program mentor Sis. Elizabeth Gomez, who is also her union president, and two other mentor-mentee tandems. They are Sis. Melba Tampakan and Sis. Maia Berco; and Sis. Doris Javier and Sis. Danica Bana.

For Sis. Demi Abaniel, just transition must be inclusive, which means "investing in people as much as technology." She added that workers should be equipped with new skills instead of being left behind.

Currently the president of the Mt. Apo Supervisors Union-ALU-TUCP, Sis. Demi sees social dialogue as a means of finding common ground where both workers and employers can benefit.
