𝗣𝗢𝗣𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗦
+𝙅𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙤 𝘽𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙤𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙤

The OFM Province of San Pedro Bautista-Philippines joins the entire world in deep mourning over the passing of our beloved +Pope Francis, a shepherd of peace, compassion, and radical simplicity. As Franciscans, our grief is especially profound, for he chose to bear the name of our Seraphic Father, St. Francis of Assisi—an act that signaled a papacy rooted in humility, mercy, and care for the poor and the planet. Pope Francis lived the Franciscan spirit not merely in name, but in action. His tireless work for the marginalized, his bold calls for environmental justice, and his unwavering commitment to dialogue and fraternity mirrored the life and mission of St. Francis himself. In his every word and gesture, he invited the Church to embrace the Gospel with authenticity and joy.

Pope Francis was not just the Bishop of Rome—he was a spiritual father to millions, a voice of conscience in a troubled world, and a light to both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. His papacy reignited the spirit of synodality, challenged the Church to walk with the wounded, and reminded all friars minor of their sacred duty to be brothers to all. In his passing, the world has lost a prophet of peace, but heaven has welcomed a faithful servant. May his legacy inspire future generations to walk in the footprints of Christ, as St. Francis once did, and as Pope Francis so beautifully showed us. Requiescat in pace, Holy Father. Your voice echoes still, and your light will never be dimmed.

Prayer

Holy Lord, almighty and eternal God, hear our prayers for your servant, Pope Francis (+) whom you have summoned out of this world.

Grant him a place of refreshment, light and peace. Let him pass unharmed through the gates of death to dwell with the blessed in light, as you promised to Abraham and his children for ever.

Accept, Pope Francis (+) into your safe-keeping and on the great day of judgment raise him up with all the saints to inherit your eternal kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙨 | 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛 𝗢𝗙 𝗝𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗔𝗦 𝗔 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 & 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗚𝗢𝗗'𝗦 𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙-𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

The death of Jesus on the cross held profound significance for the Franciscans, who saw it not as a necessary sacrifice for atonement, but as a free and loving act of God's self-revelation. St. Francis, in particular, was deeply moved by the image of the crucified Jesus, viewing it as the ultimate expression of God's love and the core of the Paschal Mystery.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀:

𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙪𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙒𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚:
Franciscans emphasized the inseparable connection between God's love and His suffering, viewing the Passion as a manifestation of God's love for humanity.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚:
They saw the cross not as a consequence of sin, but as a freely chosen act of love, where God "spilled blood" to reach out to humanity.

𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚:
The Franciscan view stressed the inherent transformative power of love, which requires openness from both God and humanity.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨:
The cross is inseparable from the Incarnation, as the love that led to God becoming human also brought about the sacrifice on the cross.

𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙜𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙖:
Some Franciscans, like St. Francis of Assisi, received stigmata, which are considered miraculous wounds corresponding to the wounds of Christ, further connecting them to the crucifixion and its
significance.

𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩:
Franciscans sought to imitate Christ's love and self-sacrifice through service to the poor, embracing poverty as a form of self-crucifixion and a way to be open to God's grace.

𝗟𝗔𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬 | the fourth Sunday of Lent, is a time for rejoicing and hope, marking the midpoint of Lent, and the church expresses joy in anticipation of Easter. A prayer for this day might express gratitude for God's gifts and a desire to live a life worthy of His love.

𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚'𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙇𝙖𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙮:

Loving Creator of mine, I feel the pace quicken, the time draw near. I am filled with joy as I move toward Easter and the promised reconciliation with you. Teach me to follow the example of your Son, to be worthy of being called one of his people: a Christ-ian. Help me to live each day as he did, turning hatred to love and conflict to peace. I await the new life with eagerness, faith and a deep gratitude.
