SALIGAN is proud to feature our externs: Francheska Mari Alivio, Deanne Lawrence Tano, and Michelle Angela Ucab, third-year law students from the Ateneo de Davao University – College of Law who recently completed their externship as part of their Clinical Legal Education Program.

They immersed themselves in community-centered legal work and learned how the law can be a tool for empowerment and social change. Their reflections remind us that meaningful lawyering goes beyond courtrooms — it’s about making justice accessible to the people who need it most.

SALIGAN has successfully concluded its 2025 Summer Internship Program, joined by law students from the Ateneo de Naga University College of Law, Angeles University Foundation School of Law, and the University of Southeastern Philippines School of Law. Over the course of the program, they were immersed in alternative lawyering practice—engaging with communities, supporting legal work, and reflecting on the role of law in social change. See the highlights of their journey and read their reflections below.

For 25 years, the SOGIE Equality Bill has been the longest-running bill in Philippine legislative history. From only including “Sexual Orientation” in its initial filing, its latest version now covers “Gender Identity”, “Gender Expression”, and “Sex Characteristics” as well. Across 9 congresses and several versions, the bill has evolved yet its core remains: to protect every Filipino from discrimination.

To the 20th Congress, it is high time to heed our call: PASS THE SOGIE EQUALITY BILL NOW!!
