This coveted award recognizes leaders who transform institutions through visionary quality management and staunch commitment to global standards.

Today, he brings the same rigor of excellence-driven leadership to PCA, as he champions reforms toward a modernized, resilient coconut industry for millions of Filipino farmers.

Coconut husks sit at a quiet but critical crossroads in the climate story.

When captured and used intentionally, coconut husks are a powerful resource. They can be converted into clean, renewable energy through processes like biomass gasification or pyrolysis, providing heat, electricity, or bioenergy for rural communities and agro-processing facilities. The same processes can produce biochar, a stable form of carbon that, when returned to the land, revitalizes degraded soil, improves water retention, increases nutrient availability, and boosts long-term farm productivity. In this form, coconut husks become part of a regenerative, circular economyโ€”waste becomes value, and value stays with farmers.

But when left unmanaged, coconut husks tell a very different story.

Piled in plantations or dumped near processing sites, husks slowly rot under anaerobic conditions, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent than COโ‚‚ over a 20-year period. What could have been a climate solution instead becomes a climate liability. This is one of the most overlooked paradoxes in agricultural systems: the same material can either lock carbon into soil for decades or accelerate warming in a matter of years, depending entirely on whether we build the systems to capture it.

For coconut-producing countries like the Philippines, this choice matters at scale. Millions of tons of husks are generated annually. Capturing even a portion of this biomass transforms coconuts from a single-crop commodity into a multi-output climate assetโ€”food, fiber, energy, soil health, and carbon removalโ€”while reducing waste, lowering emissions, and increasing farmer income.

The takeaway is simple but profound:
Coconut husks are not waste. They are either an untapped climate solutionโ€”or an invisible source of emissions. The difference lies in infrastructure, intent, and ex*****on.
