𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵, 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 🌏💡

Exactly forty-seven years ago today, World Tourism Day was established to bring more consciousness to the ways in which tourism boosts the social, political, cultural, and economic value of communities. This celebration pushes forward a different advocacy annually, and for this year, we explore the incorporation of digital innovations to create better tourism experiences through the theme: Digital Agenda to Redesign Tourism. More than just another celebration, this is a representation of another global tourism journey aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The past few years have manifested the immense contribution of travel and tourism to the world, being the second-fastest growing sector. The industry has provided 366 million jobs worldwide with a continuous potential of creating even more opportunities for women, youth, and individuals globally. This major number aims to be supported by the World Tourism Organization through implementing policies that will elevate sustainable tourism and promote local tourism products by the year 2030.

Artificial intelligence and digital innovation are reshaping the way we discover and experience destinations, but this transformation should not come at the expense of the people, resources, and environments that sustain tourism. In the Philippines, the US-led Pax Silica Initiative and its proposed industrial hub in New Clark City show that the 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁.

The development of semiconductor and advanced manufacturing infrastructure to support AI will require significant amounts of land, water, and energy, directly affecting surrounding ecosystems and communities. Water sustains hotels, resorts, and local communities; energy keeps tourism services running; and natural landscapes and cultural heritage give destinations the character that draws visitors in the first place. When these pressures reach communities whose livelihoods, cultural practices, and local economies are intertwined with tourism, the consequences extend beyond environmental loss.

This World Tourism Day, let us embrace innovation with purpose. As AI and digital technologies increasingly shape how we discover and experience destinations, we must also ask who benefits from this transformation and who bears its costs. Let us promote responsible digital tourism that creates meaningful opportunities for communities, protects the resources that sustain destinations, and ensures that technological progress does not leave the people and places behind. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🌏

Today, we celebrate the annual World Environmental Health Day, raising global awareness on how our physical environment—air quality, water safety, sanitation, and environmental protection—affects public health. We commemorate this year with the theme: “𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀”, signifying the importance of being responsible stewards by grounding our decisions, policies, and scientific knowledge to the pursuit of genuine protection of our communities who bear the heaviest burden of environmental harm.

However, in the Philippines, the threats we face hinder how we can truly translate science to environmental and community protection. In this age of development, we continue to build projects in the name of evolution and economic growth, compromising ecological systems that provide the vital resources and stability for human survival. Local communities face not only threats on public health, but also risks brought by displacement, extreme weather, loss of livelihoods, economic inequality, and loss of cultural identity.

The US-led Pax Silica initiative is framed as a pioneering modernization strategy, but if industrial development is defined as structural submission to foreign economic interests to trade off local mineral wealth and cheap labor, is it truly “development” at all? With how much the project demands resources—energy, electricity, water, land use, all of which should’ve been for local communities’ livelihood and survival, science is used to destroy, displace, and marginalize. Furthermore, as a country that experiences numerous natural calamities, its intense effects brought by climate change and environmental degradation have raised public health concerns with numerous illnesses, vector-borne diseases, and loss of life. With how much our country’s environment, resources, and people have gone through and will continue to go through, how much more are we willing to suffer and tolerate everything behind blind “resilience”?

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲—𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱. It insists that clean air, safe water, and a livable environment are not privileges to be traded away for foreign capital or economic convenience, but conditions science has long proven indispensable to human survival. Standing with science means refusing to let profit, political interest, or the promise of “modernization” dictate what happens to our air, our water, and our land. It means rejecting the notion that resilience is something communities should have to perform, over and over, in place of accountability. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺—𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴.

We do not just call for awareness—we call for accountability. We call on the 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆, not in the promises of investors or the tempting appearance of “development”. We call for the 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵.

As we reach the end of 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿’𝘀 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, we close this year’s voyage with a meaningful step toward a cleaner and greener tomorrow 💚

To cap off our anniversary festivities, UP Ecotour took part in a cleanup drive at the 𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗶ñ𝗮𝘀–𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮ñ𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 – 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, bringing together our members and applicants to give back to the natural spaces that continue to inspire our advocacy.

Together, we collected a total of 𝟭𝟰𝟱.𝟰 𝗸𝗴 of trash across 𝟮𝟰 sacks! From plastic bags and wrappers to PET bottles, glass, rubber materials, and other discarded waste. ♻️

Our 30th year may be coming to an end, but our journey doesn’t stop here. May every trail we take lead us toward a future where nature and communities thrive together.

Here’s to 30 years of wandering, learning, and taking action! 🌏

Every September 20, the world observes World Cleanup Day, a day adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2023 to be observed annually. We recognize the collective responsibility we share in protecting our environment and managing waste sustainably.

This year’s theme puts food waste in focus. Every day, more than a billion meals are wasted worldwide even as millions face hunger. Food waste generates up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and costs the global economy about USD 1 trillion each year.

In the Philippines, food loss begins long before food reaches our plates. Post-harvest losses in key crops can reach as much as 40%, exposing gaps in our food systems that demand urgent action.

This World Cleanup Day, let us confront food waste in the Philippines. Buy only what we need, consume what we take, preserve what we can, share surplus, and compost what cannot be eaten. But individual action is not enough: we must demand systems that prevent waste, strengthen food security, and make responsible consumption possible. A cleaner city starts with a conscious plate. Let us turn awareness into collective action. ♻️
