"Ito ay salamin ng malalim na problema sa ating sistema ng edukasyon. Kulang ang seguridad dahil walang tiyak na deployment ng mga guwardiya sa mga pampublikong paaralan. Ang iba nga ay wala kahit bakod. Kulang din ang mga g**o at mabigat ang kanilang trabaho dahil sa mataas na class size, kaya nagsisiksikan ang mga mag-aaral sa mainit at masisikip na silid-aralan. Wala ring sapat na mga guidance counselor na naitatalaga upang gabayan ang mga kabataan. Idagdag pa rito ang kawalan ng malinaw at balanseng polisiya sa disiplina ng mga mag-aaral at ng sistema ng suporta at proteksiyon para sa mga g**o, kaya nalalagay sa alanganin ang kanilang trabaho at awtoridad. Bukod pa rito ang impluwensiya ng kapaligiran, social media at maging ng ilang matataas na pinuno ng bansa na nagiging huwaran ng karahasan. Malalim ang problemang ito at hindi ito malulutas ng mga g**o at ng DepEd lamang."

TDC STATEMENT ON THE TACLOBAN SCHOOL SHOOTING INCIDENT

The Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) deeply mourns the tragic incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City. We extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the learners who lost their lives and offer our prayers for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.

We are equally concerned about the emotional and psychological well-being of the students, teachers and school personnel who witnessed this heartbreaking tragedy. Immediate psychosocial intervention and sustained counseling support must be provided to help them cope and heal.

This incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen school safety and student support systems. TDC calls on the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure the security of our schools through the hiring of security guards and other non-teaching personnel, the strengthening of guidance and counseling programs, and the establishment of effective and humane school discipline policies.

Schools must remain safe spaces for learning, growth and hope—not places where fear and violence prevail. #

“This is the best time to repair the erroneous compensation system for teachers. Past and present salary laws classified teachers as among the lowest paid government professionals. The Congress, thru a joint recommendation in 1991 and a bill approved by Senate in 2008 (SB 2408) agreed that there was indeed an injustice. That error should be rectified and the scheme based on the obsolete salary standardization law should be put to an end.”
