NTFP - EP Asia Non-Timber Forest Products - Exchange Programme

Linking Peoples and Forests, since 1998

We work with forest-based communities to strengthen their capacity in sustainable management of natural resources. For centuries, forest-based communities in the region have harvested a wide range of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) both for subsistence use and as a source of income. NTFPs are defined as “all biological materials, other than timber, which are extracted from forests for human use

.” These include rattan and other materials for craft making, forest fruits, resins, gums, medicinal plants and honey. Working with communities towards an optimal use and management of NTFP resources, not only supports basic livelihoods, but also can provide a strong incentive for involvement in forest conservation. Recognizing the potential benefits of sharing experiences and pooling expertise, in 1998 we started an informal group of practitioners working in local initiatives in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Vietnam and the Philippines. As our partnerships strengthened and initiatives intensified, the group decided to register as a non-profit organisation in September 2003. Our shared goal is to empower forest-based communities to make use of and manage forest resources in a sustainable manner. To this end, the NTFP-EP catalyses and supports activities that build up and strengthen the capacity of our partner organisations in their work with forest-dependent communities, particularly indigenous peoples. Our partner organizations, while respecting the integrity of cultural traditions, work together with communities in developing and implementing initiatives that meet local needs. We strive to ensure that the benefits of these initiatives are equally enjoyed by young and old and by both men and women.

🎬 OUT NOW! Voices of the South 2026

We are proud to present Voices of the South 2026, Alianza’s first documentary, an immersive journey into the realities, struggles, and leadership of communities across the Global South.

In the film, socio-environmental funds share reflections from the territories where climate and environmental crises are lived every day.

Across different regions, these voices remind us that justice is not only about protecting nature. It is about rights, dignity, knowledge systems, and the power of communities to decide about their own futures.

From Indigenous self-governance and women defending territories to youth leadership and collective action, the film reflects the diversity of experiences shaping socio-environmental justice today.

✨ One message runs through all these voices:
Socio-environmental justice is not an abstract idea. It is built every day in the territories.

🎬 What happens when young people lead?

In Voices of the South 2026, Passy Amayo from the Youth Climate Justice Fund reflects on how youth-led approaches are reshaping climate action.

Across the Global South, young leaders are advancing solutions that connect climate with equity, rights, and collective futures — challenging the systems that sustain the crisis.

In this new edition of Voices of the South, this and many other perspectives on socio-environmental justice are shared by the funds that make up the Alianza network.

📅 Stay tuned — March 31.

🌱🌿 Happy International Day of Forests! 🌳🌴

This year's , with the theme “Forests and Economies,” let’s recognize the important role of forests and its deep connection with Indigenous and local communities who care for them—towards sustaining livelihoods, safeguarding the environment, and building resilient economies.

For generations, Indigenous and local communities across Asia have preserved deep knowledge of forests as sources of food, medicine, and livelihood, among many others. Yet this invaluable wisdom is at risk of being lost.

Protecting our forests means building economies that thrive.
Protecting our forests means ensuring that no one is left behind.
