“The fight of our union is the fight of all workers” – DHL United Workers Union

TIMOG AVENUE, QUEZON CITY – Workers hounded a Quezon City branch of DHL to condemn the logistics giant for its union busting against organized DHL workers of the recently-closed Sucat, Muntinlupa warehouse.
The DHL United Workers Union (DUWU), founded just last May, was met with redundancies and terminations with DHL’s union-busting despite the workers’ attempts to negotiate in good faith through a proposed collective bargaining agreement. In response, DUWU has been on strike for nearly three weeks, with members and leaders showing no desire to stop.
“DUWU organized to attain the rights accorded to them by law – the right to livable wages, to secure jobs, to organize, and to bargain. DHL management, in turn, responded through the unlawful violation of those same rights by busting the union and refusing to negotiate with them. DUWU and its allies however continue to press on, because we will not allow management to violate the sanctity of our right to organize. If we let even one company disenfranchise one union, then all unions are in danger,” said SENTRO Deputy Secretary General, Nice Coronacion.
“It is no coincidence that hundreds of organized workers were threatened with redundancies and termination just after they had formed the union. No worker deserves to be terminated purely for their desire to organize for fairer wages, benefits, and job security – especially during such turbulent times marked by high costs of living, expensive utilities, and the weak purchasing power of workers’ wages,” said Benjamin Alvero III, Executive Director of the Labor Education and Research Network (LEARN).
With multiple negotiations concluding with no meaningful benefits for the workers, DUWU reiterates their demands to DHL management.
“Our blood, sweat, and tears have been sacrificed in the name of DHL’s billions of profit. What we ask in return is the fair treatment of the workers behind such success. Should the DHL warehouse in Sucat reopen, all the affected workers must be guaranteed jobs, alongside the guarantee of livable wages against high costs of living, recompense for wage theft, job security, and the assurance that our union can freely and openly organize and bargain,” said DUWU President Nap Aromin.
Following four nationwide mobilizations with SENTRO, allies from the labor sector, and legislation, DUWU has likewise witnessed burgeoning support from across the waters – including acts of solidarity from Norway and South Korea.
“The fight of DUWU is the fight of all workers of the world. As the weeks go by, our union is emboldened by the solidarity of other workers, thus we will persevere and we will eventually win,” said Aromin.
