Tomorrow, the Senate will start the trial for the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte for violating the constitution, graft and corruption and betrayal of public trust. This impeachment trial is just, and further proves of how rotten the system is.

For the May edition of Siyentistalks, AGHAM welcomed Gabriel Chan-Obina Borja or Brielle, a member of AGHAM, who shared their insights and experiences as a space science enthusiast and science communicator in the Philippines. They talked about the challenges and barriers facing many budding researchers and scientists interested in space science, and how inequality and lack of adequate institutional support can be discouraging to those interested in pursuing careers in space in the Philippines. It was also discussed how space science is not limited to the academic setting, but is also practiced and appreciated at the community level. This way, the different branches of space science can be pursued in ways that are directly linked to the needs of the Filipino people.

In the discussion, it was also stressed that calls for more researchers and scientists in space science or other fields of STEM should be coupled with concrete and substantial government funding to provide more opportunities to Filipinos, especially those from marginalized sectors of society. AGHAM continues to call for such better support for STEM research and education as part of the broader demand for a national industrialization policy that puts the needs of the Filipino people first.

EXPLAINED: WHAT FACT FINDERS INTIALLY FOUND OUT IN TOBOSO

Last May 14th, a National Fact Finding Mission was led by human rights & civil groups to investigate the April 19th Toboso military operation.

The mission says that the findings challenge the military’s claim that all those killed were combatants, and point towards multiple violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

SARA LITISIN! BATO ARESTUHIN!

The political developments that transpired yesterday, May 11, makes one thing clear: accountability and national progress will remain impossible for as long as our government is run as a business and as a circus. Yesterday, we saw the sudden coup in the Senate to install the Duterte loyalist Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate President in response to the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte by the House. We also saw the theatrical chase scene between agents of the National Bureau of Investigation and disgraced Senator Bato dela Rosa. These all show the rotten character of a government dominated by corruption, power play, and self-interest of a few rich families, while millions of Filipinos are struggling through a global economic crisis.

Sa Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, nagtayo ng barikada ang mga residente para tutulan ang mineral exploration activities ng North Luzon Mineral Resources Corporation (NLMRC).

Binigyan ng Mines and Geosciences Bureau ang kumpanya ng exploration permit para sa 4,456 ektaryang lupa sa mga barangay ng Pao at Kakidugen noong Hunyo 2025. Nagsasagawa ngayon ng drilling activities ang NLMRC para malaman kung may gold at copper sa lugar.

Ayon sa Alyansa ng Novo Vizcayano para sa Kalikasan, mayaman sa karanasan ang mga residente ng Nueva Vizcaya sa pagbabarikada laban sa malalaki at dayuhang pagmimina.

Sa nakaraang mga dekada, nagbarikada ang mga residente ng Kasibu at Dupax del Norte, at napatigil nila ang pagpasok ng kumpanyang Royalco. Ngayong 2026, pansamantalang napatigil ng mga nagbabarikadang residente ng Dupax del Norte ang exploration activities ng Woggle Corporation.

Tinututulan ng mga komunidad sa Nueva Vizcaya ang malalaki at dayuhang pagmimina dahil sisirain anila nito ang kanilang tirahan, kabuhayan, at kalikasan.

Why do scientists oppose the Balikatan exercises?

Did you know that this year's joint military exercises with the US had 17,000 troops from seven different countries? Did you know that these exercises take place where communities are affected, and disrupt local livelihoods and leave toxic waste? And that the missiles they tested in our lands are the same missiles used to bomb West Asia?

We call on scientists, engineers and science advocates to advocate the use of technology for good and not for wars of aggression!
