Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?
One of the most difficult questions people ask is, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” When we face pain, loss, failure, or disappointment, it can be hard to understand why God allows us to go through such struggles.
In Isaiah 43:2, God says:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”
What stands out in this verse is that God does not say, “If you go through difficulties.” He says, “When you pass through them.” This reminds us that hardships are a part of life, even for those who love and follow God. Being faithful does not mean we are exempt from suffering.
The waters, rivers, and fire represent the challenges we face—pain, grief, setbacks, uncertainty, and struggles that seem too heavy to carry. Yet God’s promise is clear: we will not face them alone. His presence remains with us through every trial, giving us strength when we feel weak and hope when we feel lost.
Perhaps the better question is not, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” but “How does God help us through bad things?” Isaiah 43:2 answers that beautifully: God walks with us through every storm and every fire. He may not always remove the struggle immediately, but He promises to sustain us through it.
No matter what you are facing today, remember this: the presence of God is greater than the problem before you. The storm may be strong, but God’s promise is stronger.
