Weโve all been thereโthe โjokesโ that were never really jokes, the uncomfortable silence when boundaries were crossed, and the spaces where respect felt conditional instead of guaranteed. Too often, bastos culture is normalized, ignored, or dismissed as something we simply have to endure. But today, we choose differently. Today, we choose to stand, to learn, and to take action.
The JCMPHS GAD claimed a room! โจ
JCMPHS Gender and Development proudly joined CLAIM YOUR SPACE: The Role of Women, Men, and LGBTQIA+ in the Movement for Safe Spaces, a regional initiative led by KAWSA Philippines that empowers student leaders to champion dignity, equality, and accountability within our communities.
This was more than just a webinarโit was a reminder that safe spaces do not exist by accident; they are built by people brave enough to challenge harmful norms and courageous enough to lead with empathy. As student leaders and youth advocates, we recognize that respect is non-negotiable and safety is a fundamental right for everyone regardless of gender identity, expression, or background.
Through discussions on RA 11313 (Safe Spaces Act) and SOGIESC allyship, JCMPHS GAD continues its commitment to promoting gender sensitivity, human rights awareness, and inclusive leadership within our school and beyond. We learned that creating safe environments starts with awareness, grows through education, and thrives through collective action.
This participation reflects our ongoing mission: to break cycles of institutionalized sexism, challenge discrimination, and foster a culture where every voice is heard, every identity is respected, and every student feels they truly belong.
Because claiming space is not about taking it from othersโit is about ensuring that everyone has one.
Together, we learn.
Together, we lead.
Together, we create safer spaces. ๐
